That simply isn't true.
Second - if you have a high mileage engine that calls for 5W-30 but it's burning oil (and you're positive it's not leaking oil) going to 10W-30 is a mistake.
You're not burning oil at startup. Even a 0W oil is way too thick to get past the rings during startup.
The cold viscosity number "5" and operating viscosity number "30" are NOT on the same scale! There is NO engine oil that actually thickens as it warms up.
Is there a tiny difference between 5W-30 and 10W-30 at operating temperature? Yes but it's so minor it's not going to stop an engine that's burning oil.
You'd be better off switching to 0W-40 if you are out of warranty and are burning. Two reasons:
1. It will flow faster at startup and provide more protection, hence WAY less startup wear than 10W-30.
2. Once up to temp it will be slightly thicker. As far as 40 weight oils go, M1 is at the bottom end of what can be labeled a 40. You can think of it as a 36-37 weight oil if you want. These ratings are based on a range of viscosity. They aren't exact measurements.
Green Syntec from Germany used to be all the rage on bob is the oil guy some 15 years ago. It was sold as a 30 weight but was just about a 35 in lab testing. Provided great results for high revving engines.
If you really want to educate yourself about oil go spend a rainy day on BITOG. You'll learn more than you need to know.

No idea what the difference is between advanced synthetic and extended performance but since EP is cheaper with the rebate I figured might as well. My car will probably get its oil changed at 3000 miles (that's what 6 months will likely be)
