Title is misleading. FP still will still offer a free plan with a premium SIM purchase ($10).

If currently enrolled in their free plan, you must change to it by May 1st to avoid being automatically enrolled into a $3.99 paid plan.

Missing in the OP is the price of the "Premium SIM", or how to get on the new free plan.

  • 25MB 4G

So the takeaway is that to stay free, you buy the SIM, and only get free wifi calls (with compatible phones) using the phone's native dialer (not their FP app), and that they are basically crippling use of texts, minutes, and data use off of wifi.
So, yes practically useless in these days of other wifi dialer apps. BUT still FREE service- technically.

I quit FP long ago, but was curious about the details of this new "free plan". I wish OP would have explained it, but I hope this info will save others some time. Thanks for posting though, and getting my attention.

This article mirrors an email that I just received from FreedomPop. The dangerous part of which is the following:

I would imagine that there are many others (like myself) here on SD who may have either used their services in the distant past, or simply purchased a few of the $0.01 SIM cards that promised free international minutes.. just in case they may ever be useful.

In either case, we probably haven't given these "free" accounts much thought for the past several years.. but they may still be open, in spite of being entirely inactive.

If so.. it looks like FreedomPop intends to start charging any and all credit cards they have on file a monthly fee.

Personally, I'm fairly certain that I have several such accounts.. though I have no idea how many.. how to log in to each.. or how to close them all before I get billed.

Not sure if they can legally just automatically enroll and start charging. I am sure a lot of folks that have the accounts don't even use the sims.

Not really possible - they suspend accounts if the credit card has expired and notify the user to add a card to reactivate.

Hmmmm

It's prepaid, legally they can't send you to collections. However changing your plan is fully legal. And FreedomPop is not run by Stokols anymore. It's fully owned by Red Pocket. If you don't want this company anymore just port out to someone better.

They won't refund "Top up" if you cancel service. They said they will transfer it to new freemium account. Can it be used to pay for additional 500MB after free 25MB allowance?

Stay far away from this SCAM of a company. Good luck if you have a number there that you want to transfer out. They've now moved to a scummy tactic of flagging your account as fraud and abuse right after they give you the port out information. When you try to appeal they say they've escalated to their "upper management" - which can only work through email and will not chat or call... you'll wait days only for that "upper management" to tell you there's nothing they can do and they have no reason for why the account is flagged. Meanwhile, you number was likely already released. More stories like mine on "red it" I already opened my consumer complaint with the FCC but there's no real chance I'll get my number back. I was able to get Port Out information right from the portal on their website. I'm porting into Simple Mobile.

How sure after you that what you're saying is a widespread practice and not just a one off situation?
