These are SMR drives: Good for sequential writes. Not good (slow) for random access (RAID or system drive).

But this device is simply an external desktop hard drive with a two port USB 3.0 hub embedded in it.
There are plenty of online articles out there for anyone so included to search that recommend various devices (that are better than the My Cloud Home) for mobile device media backup. Devices from Synology and Qnap for example can be used. Or even the My Cloud line of devices (like the My Cloud EX2 Ultra) which are different and have more features/options than the My Cloud Home devices despite having various issues themselves. But at the end of the day this external hard drive would have to be connected to something else to be used. Stand alone this device won't do what that person was asking about.

I really don't understand why these USB drives are still cheaper than the cheapest 8TB internal HDD.
I also had no reliability issues with these, though my NAS/homeserver is mostly for backup/archiving.
they only really get written to if I upgrade my homeserver, or reconstitute a storage pool or something like that.
PS: disappointed that these have effectively been at this price point (on sale) for the last 3 or 4 years.
So that's the caveat -- this supposedly uses the Seagate Archive drives, which are SMR and slow when writing. While most drives are SMR now, this is a good drive for archiving things that would be read from but not overwritten constantly. It's not designed for sustained write speeds, so keep that in mind.
Hard Drive plugs into PC's USB port and then you have 2 additional ports on the drive itself (to attach whatever other devices you need).

One of these 8TB drives and a 5TB drive plugged into a USB hub and into the USB port. I even had a USB printer plugged into it for network printing too, that stopped working and I can't get into the web interface anymore.
But it's still serving great! The only thing I used the web for was checking the hard drive free space (and the printer setup).
