Can this be used as a wireless photo backup for cell phones?
This is an external hard drive. It doesn't have embedded WiFi or Ethernet capability. One would have to connect this to a computer, network attached storage or other device in order to copy files to it. If you are looking to backup media on your mobile phone, you have a number of options. from using Cloud Storage services (free or paid) to using an NAS that support mobile device media backup. There are likely other dedicated devices as well that could be used to backup mobile devices.

But this device is simply an external desktop hard drive with a two port USB 3.0 hub embedded in it.

and yet, you and the 10 other people who've expressed an opinion on this have yet to link to one. instead, you'd rather complain.
LOL just pointing out the My Cloud Home sucks. Others, including myself, point out that this is an external hard drive and that it would have to be connected to something else for them to copy data to or from.

There are plenty of online articles out there for anyone so included to search that recommend various devices (that are better than the My Cloud Home) for mobile device media backup. Devices from Synology and Qnap for example can be used. Or even the My Cloud line of devices (like the My Cloud EX2 Ultra) which are different and have more features/options than the My Cloud Home devices despite having various issues themselves. But at the end of the day this external hard drive would have to be connected to something else to be used. Stand alone this device won't do what that person was asking about.

One thing to note is some routers do allow you to connect a external drive like this via usb and interface with it over the web. Think of it as a very basic nas solution but obviously depends on the router and use case

Shows up online right now with $30 off... why do Costco do this where if I buy now then I have to submit a price adjust... not as bad as a rebate but more work because if I forget to submit during the promotion time then Costco denies the price adjustment.

I got this drive on sale for $100 about a year ago. I think Staples sold it then.

Why can't they make these with simple ethernet port already? NAS's are still very expensive.

Is this shuckable?
Yes. Using 6 outside their case. 4 in a NAS and 2 as rotating backup drives (easier without the enclosure)
I really don't understand why these USB drives are still cheaper than the cheapest 8TB internal HDD.

I also had no reliability issues with these, though my NAS/homeserver is mostly for backup/archiving.
they only really get written to if I upgrade my homeserver, or reconstitute a storage pool or something like that.

PS: disappointed that these have effectively been at this price point (on sale) for the last 3 or 4 years.

I have one of these for about a year -- hooked up to my NAS, which has a USB port for an external drive. In that configuration it was very slow to write -- replaced it with a WD Red Plus and a different USB enclosure. I now use this as a storage device for storing my on-site backups from my computers (critical files are also backed up to a cloud service).

So that's the caveat -- this supposedly uses the Seagate Archive drives, which are SMR and slow when writing. While most drives are SMR now, this is a good drive for archiving things that would be read from but not overwritten constantly. It's not designed for sustained write speeds, so keep that in mind.

Acts as a USB hub, letting you daisy chain devices to it.

Hard Drive plugs into PC's USB port and then you have 2 additional ports on the drive itself (to attach whatever other devices you need).

I loved that GoFlex box (base), I got that at Costco too. I'm still using mine.

One of these 8TB drives and a 5TB drive plugged into a USB hub and into the USB port. I even had a USB printer plugged into it for network printing too, that stopped working and I can't get into the web interface anymore.

But it's still serving great! The only thing I used the web for was checking the hard drive free space (and the printer setup).
