Simple, wired connect is almost always more stable. Desktop, printers, streaming devices, alarms, just to name a few.

It's choices...
I have a powerline set up by my TV. I connect this to the powerline.
Then I have items to connect to this.
Like Fire Cube, or ROKU with Ethernet
XBox
Yamaha Receiver
Blu-ray with Smart apps.
Spy Cam.
Etc.
You can even plug your smart Tv with Ethernet to get better streaming.
My router only has one ethernet out, but I have multiple devices that either require (security cam hub) or greatly benefit (Sonos network, streaming boxes, etc.) from a wired ethernet connection. So I use one of these as a channel splitter to hardwire multiple devices. It, and all connected devices, live in my media center. So it's neat & tidy with no wires visible from the outside.

I guess I'm the rare one who don't like it or any switch of similar patch panel style.
The design is like a minimized rackmount switch.
Ports and indicators in the front and power at the back.
This style works fine fine in rackmount server environment where cable patching is often, but not so much for most home user.

I much prefer the Trendnet switch I've been using over 10 years with 0 issue. Metal case that some people think that matters
It has ports and power at the back and indicator lights in front which is more practical and much cleaner look.

What do people use this for? I'm somewhat interested and tech inclined, but I'm not sure I'll ever do home servers, raspberry pi, home media plex server, etc. I also probably won't need more wired connections for internet

That makes sense. But because most home users are just going to hide this somewhere out of sight, I don't think it matters too much. Might as well go with the cheaper option.

I use it to run one ethernet cord from my router through the floor to the basement. I connect it to this switch and all my devices in the basement to it so that they all have an ethernet connection.

How does this compare to the Netgear GS305 which has a metal case and costs only $0.50 more?

This is the one to get. Simple, efficient, inexpensive... and it just works.

I have one in my basement office to allow me to share an incoming Ethernet line with my NAS, my old non-wireless printer, and to connect to my Powerline. The basement HT has one to provide connectivity to my Roku, Streambar, Arcade, and everything else. Another in my upstairs living room console to provide a hard connection to a secondary wireless router, as well to as that Roku, HDTV, media players, and Raspberry Pi... and a fourth in my wife's office to allow access to two other NAS devices and to provide a hardwired connection for her.

The only complaint - and it's purely cosmetic - is that as megazone23 observed all of the connectivity (RJ45 ports, power) and all of the status lights are on the same side. Since three of my four switches are openly accessible/visible, I would prefer to have the ports on the back (since I rarely need to change what's plugged in where) and have a cleaner front with just the status lights.

But if looking primarily at substance over style, this is the one you want.
