I've had this on my warehouse watch list for a bit and noticed the clipped coupon box tonight making it the lowest price since BC (before corona). Reviews make it seems like a solid temp controlled unit so let the great debate begin about whether or not the Hakko is better!

Comparing this to the 951 is ridiculous. That's a $260 unit. I have had this Weller for a couple a years now. They had a design flaw in the iron which caused it to come apart. Weller replaced mine no questions asked with the new design and it has been working great. I don't do a lot of re-work or industrial type soldering. This is a perfect entry level soldering iron from a trusted brand that destroys the cheap crap you see out there. Quickly heats up and maintains temps. Also this is usually at $110, rarely goes on sale. Great deal.

Old technology tips FYI. Takes about 40 seconds for tip to get to temp vs 10 seconds on newer style. Also there is an EEVBLOG video on the lack of safety features in this particular model compared to say the Hakko FX888D.

fwiw, I have a Hakko FM204 that I got a great deal on. I'll never go back to tips without the heating element built in.
Can you explain why tips with built in heating elements are that much better?

Plus when the heating element goes out, it's not major surgery to replace it. You don't have to stop working, you just grab another tip. Had the WESD51 that had the element go out twice on me. Never again.

Good iron for a good price. Yes, it's not an FX951 but it is equivalent to the Hakko 888 or older 936.

I have the hakko 888D and I love the little guy. I think I got mine for $79.99 on a one day deal a while back, lowest I've seen but it worth it if it's a bit over. The compact size makes it easy to fit anywhere on my desk and temps ramp up quickly and maintain well. Changing put tips is pretty easy as well. Never tried this weller in particular but my shop has all weller.

Fancy! I might get into this one day to DIY LED lights in Lego sets.. just finding step-by-step For Dummy info on how to do it without destroying lego bricks is a different story entirely.. I've also been trying to figure out exactly what they use in the Lego light kits like exact LED light size and the strands they use.. they really make a massive difference between a dull Star Wars ship vs one that actually has life to it.. or any model/Lego set for that matter.

I have the Hakko FX888, and adjusting the temp is the dumbest, most counterintuitive process in the entire world.

The Weller, with it's simple up/down arrows is light-years ahead. You don't have to read the manual to figure out how to adjust the temps.
