Yes, it's $10 higher than the coveted $180 ($15/TB) price point, but it has a three-year warranty rather than the two years of the WD Elements/EasyStore or one-year of the Seagate Expansion.

I picked up a couple from Amazon two weeks ago, the drives are WD120EDAZ-11F3RA0.

This is the one that hardware encrypts data with no way to turn it off. May or may not be a problem depending on your use case.

These are shuckable and you would need to do the pin trick on the power connection. However I've discovered if you use a molex to sata adapter and simply use the molex connector you more than likely have on your power supply, you won't need to do the pin trick

Pretty sure you can wire all of your hdd power cables sata->molex->sata and never have to deal with that again.

And is this encryption piece on the disk or in the electronics? So if you shuck it before ever spinning it up it should be clean right?

+ Be aware this My Book external has the hardware encryption vs. the Elements in the other deals does not. I've had the board in one of these go bad years ago losing all the data.

- Any chance you could explain or link to details on why the hardware encryption is bad for long term reliability? ty!

+Not an issue if the drive is shucked and used without enclosure. The encryption protects the data if the drive were to be removed and connected directly to the SATA in PC. However if that SATA to USB board that handles the hardware encryption ever fails, consider the data lost or very hard to restore (finding another working enclosure that has the same decryption key). My external was on and connected 24/7 for year or so (forgot how long) before it failed. You can search "wd my book enclosure failure" for more details.


You might need to use the 3rd pin trick. (was mentioned in the same thread a couple of weeks ago)

As you restated from previous threads, if the sata to usb controller board goes bad there goes all your data.

Also as i mentioned, if you use a molex to sata adapter, the 3rd pin trick is unnecessary if you just don't want to go through the process of scraping away the 3rd pin.
