Gift card can be used at either Sam's Club or Walmart.
Be sure to change your account to not auto renew. (Auto renewal, by default is turned on.)
To turn off Auto Renewal:
Go into your Account and then click "Auto Renew Settings" under "Membership" on the left-hand side. Uncheck (turn off) Auto Renew.

Also now that I'm logged into my Sam's account if I click that link in the OP I get just get the normal Sam's website.

Got 45$ gift card. But not sure if discover provides 45$ credit.
The prior visit, when I went to check whether they had the gift I wanted, customer service told me the deal was expired and they didn't know anything about a current offer.
I had the impression it was a little chaotic, which is why I waited to have the gift card in hand before leaving the membership desk when signing up. I wouldn't trust the statement credit, etc. given their lack of knowledge of the offer the first visit.
In the ValPack T & C post, I wonder if Sams Club membership can be purchased as a gift? If it can, then I could purchase the gift of Sams Club membership at this time and when my current Sams Club membership expires, I could give the gift of Sams Club membership to my wife as she is not a Sams Club member. If I read the T & C correctly, nowhere does it state that the Sams Club Membership activation must take place immediately. In fact it states "Primary memberships are valid for one year from the date of issue." If joining online, gift card will be provided as an eGiftCard and will be emailed to the email address provided at signup in approximately 21 days upon creation of membership. If joining online, gift card will be provided as an eGiftCard and will be emailed to the email address provided at signup in approximately 21 days upon creation of membership. Just to clarify:
Signup online via link in this post, pay membership using discover, head to store to receive $45 gift card and then wait on discover credit, is this the right sequence?
And what does one show at store, to claim gift card based on this link?

Finally went to a store the past weekend to pick up my membership cards and my gift card. They asked me for the 98... code. I didn't have one. Then they said I should have received an e-gift card. I didn't.
I was politely being firm. They knew I wasn't leaving without the gift card. They called a manager over and I had to run through the same timeline, show her the welcome emails, etc.
After 30 minutes, they handed me a $45 gift card.

Sams switched vendor for the 6 lbs italian meatballs. Those in the new blue package are more salty, with less seasoning.
