Yes. Any compatible Zwave hub is required. Compatible hubs are listed on the website.
but if you dont want the smart functionality, you can still use it as a dumb switch without any hub.

Wish the Red were in stock. We are in the middle of a remodel, and I need a ton of switches/dimmers, but they've been OOS forever.
We have Red Series in stock now!

I have a couple of these but have not been a fan due to the significant lag when pressing the paddle switch before the light turns on (or dims). It is noticeable and makes me prefer every other brand of smart switch I've purchased. Is there a fix for this or do you just live with it?
We have fixed this with a firmware update. You can find more info in our support.inovelli.com

You can absolutely change it although in this case they gave us too many options, lol. This is set via your hub or using clicks at the switch. Have to play with them to find sweet spot for your bulb/fixture type:

Dimming Speed: How fast or slow the light turns on (or dims) when you hold the switch (ie: dimming from 10-20%, 80-60%, etc)
Dimming Speed (Z-Wave): How fast or slow the light turns on (or dims) when you adjust the switch remotely (ie: dimming from 10-20%, 80-60%, etc)
Ramp Rate: How fast or slow the light turns on when you press the switch 1x to bring from On to Off or Off to On
Ramp Rate (Z-Wave): How fast or slow the light turns on when you bring your switch from On to Off or Off to On remotely
Minimum Dim Level: Minimum level the light switch will dim to
Maximum Dim Level: Maximum level the switch will dim to

I can understand your frustration here but since we aren't carrying the Black Series anymore, we needed more room in the warehouse!
It's only frustrating because I just bought $400 worth of switches and had I known that sales were still a thing I would have waited and saved a couple hundred.

Love these switches! And Inovelli's customer service has always been stellar in my experience as well. Now if I could only think of where else I need another z-wave switch.... 😂

Great price for these. Wish the Reds would go on sale like this.
lol, no kidding. I was fortunate enough to nab the pre-orders on the Red for the huge discount... I still have a couple to install but I'm running out.

I'm pretty sure this can be fixed by adjusting some of the configuration settings like minimum turn-on level. Check over at their community forums, I've found them to be very helpful.
This type of delay would annoy me too. If it is a delay even in the on/off switch I don't see how any z-wave configuration would fix that. Typically those settings are things like the ramp rate and percentage dim change.

I might be interested in the black on/off series to replace some dimmers because I want to use some hue colored bulbs and dimmer switches are no good. I've not yet found a great way to use hue colored bulbs with existing switches. Can these black on/off be programmed from the paddle to not actually turn on/off but send some kind of signal that I could program home-assistant to intercept and convert to a huge on/off signal instead? I am still trying to find the best solution for using hue bulbs on existing switches. The on/off switches turn hue bulbs on/off back to white but sometimes you can get into a situation where you just want to turn the bulbs to a color but then have to go turn the bulb on from the switch first. It is an annoying two step process. Maybe a better way would be to see if home-assistant can be programmed to initiate an "on" to the switch whenever the colors are adjusted.

Same here. I'm on v1.48 and the delay is still there even with fastest parameters that I have tried. It takes longer than it should be, or at least what is my expectations. Anyway it's slower to turn the bulb ON than homeseer dimers that I have. Besides this is an excellent z-wave dimmer

I've had much better luck with these than the GE switches.

Agree, but it partially depends on the bulb as well. I saw a difference when I tested it with various LED manufacturers. They too have their own ranges I believe. Though many don't disclose as it's not something a typical consumer looks for. My LED retrofits are instant on with the Red dimmers in some rooms on v1.48

Get ready for built-in Ghost lighting in your home :-) These switches turn on/off randomly and customer service is non existent other than on SD deals. You have been warned.

That is not true at all. Their customer service is phenomenal! Have you been to their community forums? There are hundreds of people willing to help and many from the company themselves, even the CEO Eric. As someone who has had these switches and other Inovelli switches for years, mine never turn in at random. Sounds like you may have an issue with your hub settings or you may have something set to vacation mode in your hub.
