Google Photos announced they would start counting photos uploads against storage after June 1st, 2021 [google.com]. I take a LOT of photos/video and upload a lot onto the platform, even in high quality it is over 4TB uploaded. The storage benefit on Pixel phones are by device, not by account. Also you don't have to actually take the photos on the phone to upload them, just have them on the device. No problem for me especially since I'm loading upwards of 30GB at a time.
I don't mind the people saying "but it's the cloud", and I do have other backups, but the stellar object recognition, mapping of photos, and power of the service they offer can't be beat in my opinion.

Instead of copying directly from the hard drive to the phone (the Pixel 3 requires the external media be FAT32 for some weird reason), the easier way is just plugging the drive into your computer and copying the files to the phone instead. No need to worry about compatibility that way.
Here is a link of supported files [google.com] for Google Photos. Unlimited still has some caveats
* No videos bigger than 10GB file size
* No photos bigger than 150MP resolution or 200MB file size
File types that can be backed up.
Photos: .jpg, .heic, .png, .webp, .gif, and some RAW files.
Videos: .mpg, .mod, .mmv, .tod, .wmv, .asf, .avi, .divx, .mov, .m4v, .3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .m2t, .m2ts, .mts, and .mkv files.
DNG files (including those from the iPhone) will also backup

So now I'm like "....but it had a lithium ion battery, no?"

Was really hoping to unlock the bootloader and play around with the phone. But I guess that's not happening.
Crappy part is I bought 2. Guess which one has a dead spot on the screen but has the unlockable bootloader!
