They are closing 120 of 500 stores and going for more of a tire/service firestone approach.
The nearest Pepboys to me (Knoxville, TN) closed their parts store during early covid days and never reopened it. The last time I visited, I recognized the service manager as a former manager at another auto repair shop in my local town. He told me they would not be reopening the store, but would be expanding the number of service bays, as the parts side did not make much money anyways. You can still order through the web site and pick them up at the store. Their service department seems to be always swamped.
One interesting tidbit that may not apply to all Pepboys locations. At his previous auto mechanic shop, they would allow you to bring your own parts, which I liked a LOT. I could buy much higher quality parts for a better price through the web, and pay them for installation. After he left, this shop discontinued this practice, which is why I quit using them. When I mentioned this fact, he told me that they will allow you to bring your own parts. I don't know if this applies to all locations, but it would be nice if they did allow it.
