OS is one thing, but security is another, i would be okay with a older OS as long as it still gets regular security updates and patches. Its like a car warranty. If you keep your phone 3 years then who cares. If you keep it five you are looking at open source or let er roll. True apple supports longer if that matters to the owner. Also id guess 5g becomes a thing in 3 years so old 4g phones will have coverage gaps or speed issues so any amount of patching cant help. Personally i type this on an ipad and use a macbook but i find ios on phones crappy so i use android.

Also an iphone is $850, you can buy 3 of these Smilie

I'm not saying dramatic changes are needed. However, people always make a huge fuss out of getting buggy OS updates. The most recent revisions added new things, but nothing groundbreaking.

Read up on A11 + A12. They're updates most would do fine without.
