My virtuo broke within a few months of light use this year. It just stopped powering on no matter what. Customer service did not rectify. Bummed.
Both my Vertuo AND another one I gave as a gift broke within 18 months of buying them. Both machines were used with at most 3 pods a day. It had the red and green light for a while, so we descaled it but it didn't seem to help. Eventually it just crapped out and would not start. We called the customer service line and they said it's only one year manufacturer warranty and to fix it would cost $130 so we said no thanks. At the very end of the call, the customer service rep had the audacity to ask if we wanted to buy another sleeve of this new flavor... Crappy customer service for sure.

The wife wants one, but I'm reading horrible reviews on their website and across Reddit.

One word: incredible. I own just about every type of coffee machine imaginable and Nespresso blends are amongst the best I have ever had, plus the crema adds a nice texture to each sip. I have had the Next machine for over a year now and I have had zero issues. The Next is the newest model and as such has more features than the other machines (WiFi, firmware updates and compatibility with new 18oz pods). Coffee is scolding hot. Lots of misinformation about these machines are being spread mostly from folks who don't know how to read a user manual.

It's not reviews but a lot of users report leaking of water from the machine on the next models. And Nespresso is offering to replace them with any other vertuo model. That tells me there is an issue in manufacturing that Nespresso is aware of

The leaking water issue is because folks don't empty the capsule basket. I belong to a Nespresso Facebook group and have to educate people on a daily basis. They continue to blame the machine for not knowing how to use it properly.

That is their worst quality machine and they're pushing it like crazy at all department stores.

First: If you like cappuccino/espresso, don't get Vertuo, get original. The Original capsules make espresso shots. The Vertuo is more for coffee.

I had an original about two years. It was very convenient, and with the milk frother, you get a quick cappuccino. I used Peet's red capsules at about 62 cents each, two per drink.

Then I bought a used Breville. Far, far better taste. I tried the Nespresso after getting the Breville and couldn't stand it. The Breville makes much better espresso/cappuccino.

Then I sold the Breville and bought a commercial Italian machine. Now my drinks are better than cafe quality. The milk streams perfectly, and I can make latte art.

Which should you choose?
If you want coffee and not cappuccino-type drinks, I wouldn't get Nespresso at all. You can make a pot of freshly ground, freshly roasted coffee that is much cheaper and will taste far better.

If you like cappuccino-type drinks, Nespresso original is ok, not bad. It doesn't taste as good as a cafe but it's extremely convenient.

If you want better, buy a Breville Barista Pro. Much better taste but it takes more effort. The Breville will quickly pay for itself compared to the Nespresso, even the 62 cent per shot capsules. But it's more effort, bordering on hobby.

My new machine is so big it barely fit my kitchen. I bought a kitchen cabinet and countertop at Lowe's for $200 and put it in my breakfast room. Then I ran a water line from my kitchen sink and plumbed the machine. I installed an in-line water filter. I'll add a small sink next. Now I have a full cafe at home, and never go out for coffee, but it cost a lot and you have to be a barista to get cafe quality. It's a long way from popping in a capsule and pushing a button. It's a full hobby at this point. I use scales and keep logs of the grinder settings I use. The tamper station I use costs more than my Nespresso. But it is still less expensive than going to a cafe.

From my reading stay away from the Next model. Everything else is good. If you only want espresso buy the original line. If you want cups of coffee to then you have to do the vertuo model. Coffee isn't hot hot but if you run hot water through the machine first and into your cup then brew your pod it makes a big difference. I don't mind it without doing that step as I don't have to wait for it to cool down.
So, my machine had a leaking problem you need to be aware of and I was able to get a new machine sent to me (NEXT) version. Really do not know the cause but perhaps they fixed the issue with latest NEXT machines. It would leak black coffee around middle of the machine. 1 year warranty so hopefully this will not occur again.

As far as the machine goes, it works great. Note that espresso will not be as hot as the smaller pod machines. The pods are refillable and I use Recaps. Getting the right coffee and grind level is important. I have both the small espresso machine and this one. Both are refillable. But note the following,

For the Next machine, keep the old pods and use foils from Recaps. DO NOT use any other pods including the hard metal ones. Use a shot glass to hold the pod. run a tip along the edge of the foil seal to seat the pod capsule foil and roll over the edge. Do not hard pack the pods since this is not pressure extraction.

For the small pod machines you can use metal pods but only the ones with concave bottom and not a flat bottom. They will have one center hole surrounded by outside circular holes. The bottom will have a concave interior to prevent damage from piercing spikes in the machine. You can get these on ebay real cheap.

And use bottled or filtered water.

You, sir/ ma'am, are a true coffee aficionado. I respect your serious take on coffee. I'm just a regular Joe who haven't been impressed with keurig, and have enjoyed my $0.60-$1.00 nespresso espresso or coffee for the past 6+ years starting with the pixie machine. I used to drink it about once or twice a week, then I got kids and now drinking daily.

This worked for me for $10 off pods. Think you have to spend at least $90 or something? Use code " SMSCOMM "

The trick to hot espresso with any machine is to heat your cup with hot water before you brew. If you brew 2 oz into a cold-ish ceramic cup, your espresso can (should) be 195-205F, but the cup will absorb all that heat. Use the hot water dispenser to preheat your cup, then dump the water and brew the coffee into your warm mug.

The other thing with Nespresso and most espresso makers is always pull an empty, water only shot before your first shot, or else the machine will cool the shot and that harms the flavor.

Amazon currently has the Nespresso VertuoPlus for $104, is this a good price?

No, this was the original VertuoPlus. I'm never buying Nespresso again based on the quality and lack of customer service and am just warning others too.

the horrible reviews are accurate. Nespresso machines are terrible peices of junk. In less than 1 year we are on our 4th machine. We bought a new one, they replaced it with a new one, they repaired that one, then ended up replacing that one with another new one.

only thing worse than the machine is dealing with their customer service. They are programed to be stupid. They force you to walk through all the troubleshooting you would have already done before calling them so be prepared for a 1 to 2 hour phone call to get a repair or replacement going.
they push repair. If you want a replacement sent get your angry hat on to make that happen.
