I'm torn on buying since my gen 3(?) battery basically died, but thinking they may release a new Paperwhite model this year. Sometimes these sales come just before a new model, so I might see what Prime day brings too.

How annoying are the ads? Is there a way to remove them?
Yes. I got them removed free of charge via the customer chat. Pretended that I'm worried about not being able to see the new "Book cover" feature and they replied that it's only for ad-free versions. I pretended to be sad about missing out on such an awesome feature being a long time Kindle user. Customer representative asked if she could remove the ads for free. I let her. Give it a try. I think they have a monthly quota or something for the number of users they do this for.

Customer service has removed them for free from about 4 different kindles I've bought . Just complain and they don't push back, they know it's a stupid policy lol
Same price at Target. Or if you don't need the paperwhite, Target has the Kindle on sale for $65. Lower resolution and battery life though. https://www.target.com/p/amazon-k...A-79804909

I have a ~3-year-old paperwhite and I love it. It totally changed my reading habits, as getting new books is so easy. It also removes the challenge of finding a comfortable reading position/angle for even and odd pages in physical books (not sure if this only bothers me).

They're just on the lockscreen. I have my Paperwhite in a folio case and only see them for a split second when I open the case and power up the device. Hardly noticeable
I love my Paperwhite. I got it last year as a Father's Day gift, and being able to get digital books from the library helped save my sanity last summer. Battery life is great, clean, easily legible text, comfortable form factor. If you read a lot, I highly recommend it.
