I have just about every DeWalt tool known to man, both corded and cordless. I own this, the 996, and the 12v Max drills. I used to use this almost all the time, only grabbing the 996 for heavy duty work.

Then I got the 12v Max tools. The drill, the driver, and the Impact. I don't touch my Atomic stuff anymore. The 12v Max line is so, so much better.

So while I do think this is a decent deal, I would recommend the 12v Max line over the Atomic line.

I have this drill, even considered getting a second when I saw this. A have a few drills at home, some Makitas (a few years old) along with one of their top end models, the Dewalt Powerdetect Drill/Driver (DCD998), and a M12 installation driver (changeable heads).

About 90% of the time this is my go-to tool for drilling and screwing, it's comfortable in my hand, relatively lightweight, small and convenient and it just works for most tasks. Last few months I've been working on a remodel at my parents home and had several of my drills are sitting out for use. This one gets grabbed the most by everyone in the family. People even wait rather than grab some of the others (though the M12 does get used too).

I think for MOST home use/projects this will more than suffice. It's probably not going to drill concrete and it might not do everything quite as fast as a top end model, but the weight savings and comfort is worth it.

The batteries ... well I have like 8 of the 1.3 amp batteries and I wish they offered just a 2 or 3 amp instead. The 1.3 are lightweight, but the 2's aren't much different in size and weight and I like being able to actually check battery drain instead of waiting til it bogs down or stops.

Does anyone know if the batteries for this are compatible with any other company's line of tools? Looking at some of the battery images, it very closely resembles the Sears Craftsman 20V battery (not to be confused with the Lowe's Craftsman V20, which is a totally different line of products that forked off several years ago). I have a couple of Sears Craftsman 20V tools and was hoping to find a higher-capacity battery than the stock 1.5mAh ones that run out of juice pretty fast.

Also, how good are their 3/8" impact wrenches, and which company's are the ones to get, in the $100-$150 range, ideally brushless and at least 250 ft-lb? Using my 1/2" impact wrench (also Sears Craftsman, but from their older C3 18.2V line) on lower-torque fasteners is kind of a pain as it's so big and heavy, and using a 1/4" hex-to-3/8" square adapter with my impact driver can be a bit unwieldy, plus the loss of torque and the additional vibration it creates.

That is their low budget drill, the Atomic is better.

Was wondering if anyone could comment on a beginners situation here. I'm an apartment dweller and don't foresee any large projects in the future. I know Dewalt is considered one of the top of the line brands but could be overkill for my needs and don't want to unneccesarily be stuck to the dewalt tool line due to battery convenience.

Should I jump on this deal for a quality drill or wait for Father's day sales for a lower budget drill/tool combo? Thanks in advance!

Depends on your immediate needs, budget and plans for more tools. Dewalt has a lot of tools that will use these 20v batteries, are good quality and often go on sale. A budget $50 drill will probably satisfy most of your picture hanging and furniture assembly needs and won't have issues with some more serious stuff, it's just heavier and a bit less powerful. Do you like yellow?

The 12 volt xtreme is for $125 on Amazon. For the average homeowner/weekend DIYer, which product is better and which voltage/battery line is better to be in if one plans on buying more tools in the future? I don't mind spending the extra $25 if the 12 volt xtreme drill/product line is better.
I'm new to this so would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

That's a good point actually. I've got a 20v black and decker cordless that I got back 2015. Mostly use it for screws and drilling, size and weight is great for that. Can get into some spots where a bigger Dewalt wouldn't dream of.

Went to go charge it for the first time after moving and I can't find the charger. Looks about the same size as the DW atomic, might bite...might wait for a bundle.
