I am an elementary school teacher. 50k a year, health insurance is outrageous, (1200 or so for my family of 4) days off are nice, but work 60 hours a week during the school year.

If I didn't have my disabled veteran money to supplement my income I would not be able to do it. Not sure if these people commenting actually know what teachers make. (I'm in Texas, state makes a difference)

Teacher pay is garbage. I am getting my masters and moving into administration. More money, half the work, gonna be great.
Thank you for your service!
This is a very common misconception--teachers are *not* paid for the summer. Teachers are paid only for the working days of their contract (180+ or - a few days depending on the district).

Most teachers choose to spread their paychecks out to be received over the summer, but they are technically only being paid for Sep-June.

Teachers have the option of simply receiving larger paychecks from Sep-June, and *not* getting any checks for July/August. But most choose to have their 10 paychecks divided into 12 paychecks for consistency/simplicity.

Quote from Dr. J :
(my wife is a teacher) and I can tell you the amount of burden that parents add is amazing - not only in general harassment ("why didn't you give my kid an A?!?!?!") but also in the way of IEP which is basically an official way to seek special treatment or exceptions for your kid due to some sort of "diagnosed" "disability". When 2-3 kids out of 100 have one due to genuine issues it's not such a big deal, but when 20% have one it becomes a problem. Why? IEP's include all sorts of shit that creates extra workload - like teacher needs to allow the kid unlimited time to complete an assignment or exam, teacher needs to make cheat sheets for the kid to study or use during an exam, kid can bail/has unlimited passes to guidance, etc. And that's on top of the special meetings that are routinely called to go over these kids' IEP's and such.
DW is a teacher as well. I can echo these statements. She's had at times up to seven kids in a class of 15 with IEPs or requiring other accommodations. She's seen kids in high school that read on a 3rd grade level. She has parents that argue every grade their child receives. She has kids that don't show up for school and the parents never respond. I've watched her spend an entire weekend grading papers and planning for the next week, at the expense of time with family and friends.

Add in getting a curriculum from people with business degrees who have never stepped foot in a classroom and you have a recipe for disaster. The system she teaches in does not have a vocational program and believes every student is going to college. So there's no alternate path for kids that can't afford to, or don't want to go to college, or don't do well in a class room but flourish in a trade. Other nearby counties have programs such as HVAC, plumbing, electrician, auto repair, and things like cosmetology and culinary arts. Those kids get hands on instruction and practice so when they graduate high school they can immediately start working.

It's not a fun job. But 95% of the teachers I know love what they do.

Back on topic: If you're a teacher, go enjoy some of these perks today.

It's never enough. In Los Angeles County California, Teachers haven't worked all year! Yes, of course they got paid. LOL! Nope! 3 months and everybody's birthday, Easter week, Christmas 2 weeks just isn't enough anymore. Gimme a free burger too!LMAO

Teaching online is not "haven't worked" ... You must not have any teacher friends or kids.

Lots of misinformation in this thread, but I know that if you are in Texas you are working your butt off this year. I am a Texas teacher trying to teach virtual learners and in person students at the same exact time, in elementary school, without any increased budget or help. The grid in Texas failed and we missed one week so our school year got extended into June.

If you are in a liberal state where your teachers don't work or aren't held accountable, then why don't you guys vote in some changes?

People having problems sound like their own doing. Texas teachers have been working all year, taking kids back, and keeping the economy open so that Texas could open back up. Even when we did remote after spring break it was hell. No teachers want to do remote. In person is 10000x easier, and I wish I didn't have to teach remote learners.

Absolutely agree that teacher pay is garbage for the amount of hours they work and there generally isn't much time to slack off like in other jobs.

Even if you give the kids some low effort group project (that everyone hates), you still have to be monitoring them to keep them from killing each other. Meanwhile, I work 35 hours a week (1hour unpaid lunch each day), and slack off for at least 2-3 hours a day.

Well, since I apparently pissed off the moderators and had my earlier quote deleted because I was defending civil servants. Let me try again.
Teachers are part of a group of people who go through a whole load of crap and get paid crap at the beginning.
Very, very few of you complaining on here would be able to do so if it were not for the civil servants in our country.
The fact that you can read or write is thanks to teachers. Yes, I know that some of you were home schooled. But that's only a very few.
So instead of bashing teachers, how about you give just a little thanks for that fact that, even though you sound like you're stupid, you have been educated enough to be able to read these forums and have enough knowledge to form some sort of coherent sentences.

Agreed, there should be more oversight and accountability and getting rid of tenure. We should get rid of the bad teacher and only keep the good teacher.

Wow reading the comments here confirms how screwed we are when it comes to education. The amount of disrespect teachers get is amazing. You never hear anyone mocking the hours or amount of work a doctor, lawyer, or engineer put in but for some reason it's ok to mock teachers. BTW my wife and I are both teachers and few people know how much work goes into what we do.
Apparently, you need to go into an office or place of business to 'work hard'. My guess is most of the people making this complaint work some pretty menial jobs and wouldn't know a hard day of work if it smacked them upside the head.

I'm not a teacher but a parent of 3, after seeing how hard it is for my kids' teachers, I can't imagine why anyone would want to do that to themselves. They've certainly had to work harder throughout all of this, and I've seen quite a few of them retire early during the course of the past year, with their schools having difficulty replacing them. If a teaching job was such an easy, slam dunk - why are they having a hard time lining people up as replacements?

Completely agree with you. There is no room for bad teachers or tenure.
But most teachers bust their butt and do what they can with a system that is broken.
Most complaints on here are not due to the teachers they're due to a system that has failed them and our society.

Thanks for your service teachers. But isn't the movie theater first place one can catch a Covid? Hard pass

Seriously dude, you should educate yourself regarding what teachers are really all about before posting clueless comments.
Yea Dude...This is what teachers are all about...181 day work years and retirements in their 50's. Not bad for a group of people who don't know very much or do very much... They didn't make it to work over the past year but I'm sure they'll make it to the free moves...
