If you want to game, it's better to spend the extra $50 on the $600 HP that Walmart has.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/HP-Pav.../943933730

They are a Ryzen 3500 (6-core) with a GTS 1650 Super. A 1650 Super is roughly twice the graphical performance of a 5700G.

It looks like Walmart's website sells out of these very quickly and only 3rd party sellers are listed there. But if you can find them at your local store they are sold for $599.

Tell your mom to stay off the porn sites, they're known to have malware.

Esports titles and older games? Sure, at 1080p & low/medium.

New AAA games? Maybe, but at 720p & low.

Generally you'll want a discrete GPU for most PC gaming.
This is definitely wrong.

You could certainly do 720p on high for new AAA titles and likely even 1080p.

I wonder how well this would operate if I wiped the sh_tty OS off the drive and installed a *nix flavor like Elementary or whatever?
That would be an obvious choice. It's Elementary, my dear Watson.

So $600 after tax for just the 5700g is likely bad idea, yea? Doh, all the other parts are useless to me, but I want the processor and dont wanna wait 7-8+ months (filed under first of the first world problems)

If I could put a GTX 970 that I have in there, I might go for it. I doubt it though.

16 GB single channel is fine. Easy upgrade to 32 GB.

good price, but not standard motherboard or powersupply. If psu goes out you have to buy replacement from HP.

the connections are proprietary or is it the form factor?

It has a A LOT less cache: 35MB in the 5600x vs 20MB in the 5700G. As a result the 5700G will go out to the system RAM a lot more, in addition the iGPU will also be taxing system RAM. You'll want to get that second stick of ram in there ASAP for dual channel... also consider pricier dual rank kits as this machine's mobo only takes two sticks and dual rank provides even more benefit if taxing system ram a lot. That said the price comparison is apt, the two processors provide similar value.
4700G has 8 MB of L3 cache, and each core can only access 4 MB because it is split into two core complexes.

5700G has 16 MB of L3 cache, and each core can access the full 16 MB.

That's a huge improvement, and I don't think anyone will miss that extra cache. Upgrading to dual-channel RAM is obviously a good idea, although I wouldn't even bother buying a kit.

Probably, but you won't want another one for years.

This is why you buy it and put a lower end cpu in it and resell it at cost, then put this cpu in something better. Great price for just the cpu, rest of the parts are not worth keeping unless your swaping them with lower end stuff too

What about The Sims 4 and a few of the expansion packs? My wife's older desktop is starting to have issues but it has a discrete card in it, a AMD Radeon R9 360 2GB DDR5, with 8gb of RAM & the processor is a AMD A10-7800.

Any insight you can provide would be appreciated. I've done some Googling and it looks like it could run it alright, but just wanted to see what some people thought.

This would be quite a bit faster. Esp if you add another stick of memory to it for dual channel memory.
