The way this deal is structured pretty much makes it a no brainer to opt for the full board package, since it includes lunch, dinner, and the expensive transfers. Things are very expensive when you are trapped on a private island, full board is definitely the way to go.
- full board seems logical given the price/hassle of transfers, food, etc., so it's $1400, not $400
- it doesn't include flights, which from DC look to be at least a grand per person
- 5 nights is nothing for that long of a trip (if domestic US), $80/n night extra. something like two weeks seems appropriate
bringing the $399 deal to $4120 (for two)
I have no idea how this compares to a usual trip out there, this could still be slick, but the $399 resort stay definitely seems a bit headline-grabby

This isn't true, when you buy things that have a future date. A chargeback can be initiated based on the expected date of the event. I worked in chargebacks and had this happen for fraudulent concert tickets

Qater airlines has a similar package with a stopover in Doha, and their business / first class tickets are out of this world.
If you're having trouble finding a good flight, try Bandaranaike International Airport (airport code CMB) at Katunayake, Sri Lanka. You can sometimes find a cheap flight there and then get a separate ticket for the short hop to Velana International Airport. For me, it would be the same price so I am not going that route.

If one decides to jump on this trip, better use a first rate credit card company like Amex that will take care of issues quickly.
Also, keep in mind that a lot can happen a year or two from now that may require cancellation, like personal issues or like a new more serious virus variant affecting India and the nearby countries.
Flying around the world just to go to a nice beach is not an environmentally friendly act, so try to offset your carbon footprint!
