1.) Yes a tower fan and an air circulator are both fans, but they're different applications so it's not like an apples to apples. More like comparing a shop vac vs upright vacuum.
2.) The biggest reason for the difference in price (besides engineering the blades and baffles) is basically the better motor. If you can appreciate the difference that brushless power tools made (compared to the universal motor), you could appreciate this.

This is pretty much spot on. Not sure what fan you're talking about but this fan [pelonis.com] costs around $20 at Walmart and Lowes. At Walmart it is branded as Mainstays and at Lowes, it's Utilitech. The only reason I chose this fan as an example is because the manufacturer clearly lists the power consumption.

The cheap fan consumes 55 watts on high. In my area (central VA) my cost for electricity is around $0.12 per kWh after factoring in taxes, transmission services, distribution services, etc. This makes my cost of running the $20 fan around $4.82 per month if running 24 hours a day.

If the neighbor complaining about the high electric bill had 10 box fans running 24/7, the impact on their bill would likely be around $50 extra a month. I know electricity cost varies by location, but still.

Where the Vornado shines however is the amount of air moved and the lack of sound while doing so. The cheap fan only moves 65CFM on high while producing 73dB of noise. The Vornado moves 485CFM on high while producing only 59dB of noise, all while consuming two less watts of electricity. On low, the Vornado produces 105CFM and only makes 30dB of noise and would use considerably less electricity in the process. This is almost 50% more CFM on low than the box fan makes on high. 30dB is just above a whisper and 73dB is similar to vehicle traffic or a vacuum cleaner.

I got this pen for $0.50. Is a $3 pen 6 times better?

That's up for you to decide.

Is this good to help cool down a small room on a hot summer day?

Am I crazy but it doesn't seem like a brushless motor is justified for plastic blades that push air? there's very very little torque there. Sure sounds neat though
This exactly. I got excited when I saw DC because I thought it was battery powered, which might justify this price lol. I have a stronger Vornado 660 I got for 80ish which moves far more air. Right now that model is going for $99.

A neighbor of mine was wondering why their electricity bill was so high, since they were not using the air conditioner and only box fans. I handed over my kill-a-watt and they realized their cheap box fans were consuming ridiculous amounts of energy.

Tell me how this circulates air better than a 50 year old oscillating fan.

I'll save your time, it doesn't. Despite the $110 price tag.

Edit: Also; people live on the bottom of rooms, so hot air at the top is better than at the bottom? Circulating would spread that hot around around.
I guess it works if your ceiling is only 6' tall.
What I believe makes an air circulator better than an oscillating fan is because of the directed air flow coming from an air circulator compared to a fan. I think you can find various YouTube videos of people comparing air circulators to box fans demonstrating that the air circulators deliver air further than a box fan. Vornado's has a website on how their air circulators distribute air in room.

The price tag, is just that. the price someone is willing to pay.

I think for this specific fan, it seems to me like a discount and a slick deal if you're in the market for a DC motor air circulator.

I'll be curious to see how much the brushless motors extend the life. I bought a Vornado fan awhile back and had it burn out twice; the first time was a pretty simple warranty exchange and the second time was just outside the warranty period. Pretty disappointing considering how much they cost.

I just want to say that the Vornado warranty is legit, and their energy savings line with the 10 year warranty is amazing. I've had to have various things replaced - from the little turny-knob, to entire fans, and as long as it's still covered, it's basically as easy as "take a picture of the S/N". I had an old tower fan from them and its motor burned out. Emailed their support, sent them the S/N - it was out of stock, so they sent me a model 133 in apology while I waited on the tower to come back in stock.

The DC is mostly just to save electricity and let you have infinite(99 step) amount of adjustment of fan speed(which can be both annoying/pointless and good) and I had one that the build in transformer buzz and needed a exchange.

I have had a vornado fan I bought about 15 years ago. Ran it every night up until about 3 years ago only to replace it with a better looking model (that better fit our decor). I still run that old fan and it runs fine. I'll happily promote and continue to buy their products as they have been quality to me. As far as arguing over box fans vs. Vornado's, the vornado fans are superior if you know how to use them. If you don't, don't bother.

I have the 6803DC (stand fan version of this) that I got from Amazon almost two years ago for around $125. I love it - super quiet, speed control of 1-100, no need to oil. I removed the grill for the first time this past weekend to clean the blades, and there was hardly any dirt stuck on it.

I'm a big fan of these fans. I've got the Vornado 660 model from bed bath and beyond (it has an actual knob) and I have it hooked up to a smart plug. It definitely helps the main area cool down after running for a bit.

And since it makes the house feel cooler, the central AC doesn't run as often as it would if I didn't have the fan circulating the air more efficiently.

I would argue it was too extend the life of the fan. But my vorando brushed motors have never died in over 10 years. Maybe I just don't use them enough.

My biggest concern here is the electronics. I much prefer a knob on my fans.
