Since posting this, others have made me aware that this item is cheaper at Walmart (NON California). See comments in discussion thread below. /EDIT

A quick check of the interwebs shows these normally run around $53 each (Walmart, Amazon), though AutoZone has them (at the moment) for about $40.
You may want to double check that price instore. I've bought this stuff at Walmart and it was nowhere near $53.

Or buy a cheap hose/gauge, and buy the 12oz cans of refrigerant for $5 at Walmart.

$32.88 at Walmart all around me. These "kits" are generally a rip off. Call it "Ultra Synthetic" -- like other R-134a grows on trees somewhere -- and charge out the behind for it. Jobronie's advice is solid.

Now I do have a few similar kits in my garage, but all bought at WM clearance for under $10.

Absolutely. Also those gauges are unbelievably inaccurate. Different systems run different pressures at different loads and temperatures. Cars should be charged by weight only.
