After reading all the discussions about ram amount, I'm just curious how many browser tabs people keep open at a time during a typical day.

The ones who have actually used them personally say 8 is enough for most people.

Another very expensive problem with today's Apple. Prior to 2016, you could buy a computer and later upgrade it by adding more RAM or storage later once your needs change. My daily driver is a mid 2012 MBPro. I've doubled the RAM and added a SSD over the years.

Now, everything is soldered, so upgrades are impossible. To get 16 or 32 MB of RAM or a bigger SSD, you need to pay 3 times the price up front of what upgrades would cost for the same configuration, even if you don't realize the need now.

No thanks, Apple.

I've been sitting on the fence for too long and it's about time I got one. The amount of positive reviews about the whole unified architecture is overwhelming and there's enough explanations out there to understand how the RAM works together with the M1 to provide a better experience than how it used to be when you "only had 8GB of RAM" and thought you needed 16. It's not apples to apples like that anymore and anyone who jumps in an Apple thread regarding the M1/8GB setup and attacks the amount of RAM hasn't done their research.

Actually, RAM is accessed very differently on the M1 architecture which is why it runs so much better with less RAM.

33% more is a lot of money. Getting a $2500 MacBook Pro, then $200 is a no-brainer for your investment as you likely want to keep it around longer. Costco has a 90-day return policy, so if it's not enough, you'll have time to see.

With my 8GB/256GB M1 Mini, I'm driving 3 monitors (4k monitor, a 1080p monitor in portrait mode, and a 12.9" iPad 2732x2048 via SideCar) and it is insane on how much I can run and have open at once (especially when teaching with Zoom and sharing windows). I have these all open at the same time: Zoom (dual monitor mode), Excel (1 or 2 windows), PowerPoint (2-3 windows), VLC, Safari (multiple windows and multiple tabs), Kindle app, Activity Monitor, and probably some other things too (Speedtest, Maps, etc.) and I'm constantly impressed by how well it runs.

This 8GB/256GB M1 Mini is so much faster than my 2.8 GHz quad-core i7 Mac with AMD Radeon R9 M370X, which was a $2800-ish machine.

it depends on the game. it runs WoW pretty farking good, I was running 1440 at like 7 or 8. I returned it because I wanted to get the 16 to see if it runs better, but i havent yet wanted to pay retail for 16gb. This is tempting.

Got my dad one at Micro Center, 8GB. I don't believe there is a legit warning for low memory, my dad got this and I ran Malwarebytes to remove the dumb virus he'd installed. There's no such thing as a low memory warning in OS X near as I can tell. The system hovered around 5gb usage when I opened 20 Safari tabs with video then is went up Abit. I think it's pretty decent but definitely Big Slur has bugs like the red dot one where these red rectangular dots blink all over. Maybe they fixed it now idk.

My comment was intended to reflect that clearly there is discontent among potential buyers questioning if 8gb is enough. It wouldn't have been harder to throw in the extra 8 and silence any potential hesitations and make this an "instabuy". But it appears the apple fans are in full force defending this great miraculous product.

I just want into the ecosystem with a decent system at minimal cost. I'm trying to figure out if this is it or not and as a potential new customer, I'm having doubts which comments like yours don't assuage.
