After reading all the discussions about ram amount, I'm just curious how many browser tabs people keep open at a time during a typical day.

The ones who have actually used them personally say 8 is enough for most people.

The ones who have never used it and are just guessing say it isn't enough.

Another very expensive problem with today's Apple. Prior to 2016, you could buy a computer and later upgrade it by adding more RAM or storage later once your needs change. My daily driver is a mid 2012 MBPro. I've doubled the RAM and added a SSD over the years.

Now, everything is soldered, so upgrades are impossible. To get 16 or 32 MB of RAM or a bigger SSD, you need to pay 3 times the price up front of what upgrades would cost for the same configuration, even if you don't realize the need now.

No thanks, Apple.

I have both right now. I think the SSD speed alone is about 2x faster on the M1 and M1 is even faster than the i9 used in 16" MacBook in synthetic benchmark.

I must have been on that island. For the main OS drive there is no need for more than that in most cases. Yes I do IT and have been for 25 years and mu laptops and desktop both have had a 256GB for about 5 years no issues with storage. That's what external storage is for...

I like the MacMini but it can be half the size. And the M1 CPU is Only 4 Performance Cores and 4 Efficient Cores.

To Run MacOS Big Sur well you need 16GB RAM and at least 1TB SSD.
Interesting, I also have a MAC Mini 2014 with a 120GB SSD drive and 8GB of RAM and it runs Big Sir just fine.

You can't wait a week or so? laugh out loud You can price adjust within 30 days for in store purchases so I assume similar policy for online. It's pain in the butt to backup and restore to a new computer so I personally wouldn't return and rebuy cause they don't let you buy back the returned device.

Sounds like you're guessing. RAM usage depends on what the computer is going to be used for.

IMHO, onboard storage isn't a priority in the age of cloud. If you really need more, you can get an ext HD or just use the cloud. Both are cheap options

Unless you're rendering and editing video, and I'm not talking pro work. This thing will quickly fill up with apps with little room to spare. Unless you don't do much with it. Solitaire anyone?

Then there are tnose who can't afford Big Fat Internet pipes or don't even have them available in the boonies.
