After reading all the discussions about ram amount, I'm just curious how many browser tabs people keep open at a time during a typical day.

The ones who have actually used them personally say 8 is enough for most people.

Another very expensive problem with today's Apple. Prior to 2016, you could buy a computer and later upgrade it by adding more RAM or storage later once your needs change. My daily driver is a mid 2012 MBPro. I've doubled the RAM and added a SSD over the years.

Now, everything is soldered, so upgrades are impossible. To get 16 or 32 MB of RAM or a bigger SSD, you need to pay 3 times the price up front of what upgrades would cost for the same configuration, even if you don't realize the need now.

No thanks, Apple.

You may not know what "fast" look like so you don't know when it is actually "slow". Need a reference frame. I have a friend who feel fine with a machine running Celeron and 4gb ram in 2020. You may not be sensitive to the slow down that I or many people could notice. Good for you.
I'm just used to a smoother experience. I can say this owning the M1 Mac Mini for 4 months+, a windows laptop with 16gb and a window desktop with 32gb (running 8th gen i7 cpu which is supposedly slower than the M1 according to benchmark) . The M1 is the only one with occasional hiccups for the exact same user habit.

Sweet Jesus what a comment section. What I learned today? Buy 16gb if you're holding on until it dies. Buy 8GB if you're going to upgrade in the near future. Ideally less than 3 years. The arguments made in here applies to MacBook Airs and pros…

Basically I got sold on the 16gb because 5 years it's the sweet spot to upgrade. Heck my 2014 hp laptop with i74700hq still kicks some major ass and it's old af.It boots up in literally 30 seconds and does everything my $2k pc can do EXCEPT render…

At 600 bucks for this thing seems like a steal given the build quality and the future proof aesthetics. Common…. It's a steal but not future proof??? Who knows. In my case I use a laptop as a chrome book basically. Give me that ram!

IMHO just buy the 16gb…

food for thought for those desiring 16gb ram option: Microcenter has the 16gb ram option on sale for $799 which is $100 off. only caveat is it's in-store only so how well that works out as an opportunity depends on your proximity.
