My experience with the M1 mini that I had for a short period is that the quick, snappiness, etc that one notices with the M1 Mac is almost all due to the faster SSD that is on it. This is the latest machine and has a better SSD that comes standard.

So, if you can buy a reasonable Intel machine say an i5 with upgradable/replacable storage and memory, you can get the same experience. I tried it side by side with a clone configuration on an Intel Hackintosh. Even with a slower SSD, once the apps get into the SSD cache, the difference disappears.

The M1 is a better chip, no doubt but its capability is not expressed in anything you would do with just 8 GB of memory.

In fact, the M1 was significantly slower doing video transcoding with Handbrake because the SSD on the M1 mini doesn't do well with sustained reads and writes in parallel. And this was in a 16GB Mini. So, the M1 power wasn't utilized fully.

So, it is not a given that M1 will be faster for your applications. And the current downsides for buying an M1 far outweigh the benefits unless bragging rights are all you are looking for. This is why I returned it.
This is total, objective nonsense. The M1 boxes have been benchmarked to hell and they always outperform Intel boxes, even the last gen equipped with similar SSD technology.

Unlike fanbois, I have measurements and receipts including where it comes out ahead and where it doesn't including benchmarks and what happens with specific examples. None of the published reports conflict with any of it. When you have similar detailed and measured personal experience to relate rather than just bloviating, then I will consider your opinion. Until then it is just the typical fanboi noise.

People can repeat the above easily if they have the ability to set up the careful side by side comparison like I did.

As a decades-long Mac user, I want the computer to just work. I just went through hell with a failed Big Sur problem. FileVault corrupted and I could not update the OS. And restoring via CCC or Superduper is impossible because Apple rushed out the OS far too quickly. With OSX, you simply restore from your image. Not so with Big Sur.

Thankfully, I had an old backup. And a Windows machine. I had to use that, along with MacDrive, to rescue my recent data and restore it to Mojave. That's just wrong. It is impossible to restore an entire image with Big Sur or specific files, unlike being a breeze with OS X.

"Mac Vista" is NOT ready for prime time. Not even close. It's like a Tesla with Ford Pinto idiot lights. Replete with a figurative exploding gas tank. When it goes bad, it's a disaster.
Ouch dude, that sounds extremely painful. I've owned around 20 macs over the years and have had similar nightmare issues regularly. I had a 4 monitor set up at work when the first Retina MBP came out, plugged in just the 3rd monitor and the entire system bricked irreparably w/ what looked like an old tv antennae reception issue on the screen. Luckily they just gave me a new one at the Genius Bar. If I had $1 for every time I've ever had to take a mac there, lol.

I clearly said it's ignorant to write it off without even so much as an explanation. How does "8GB, trash" or "8GB, not enough" or any of the other ridiculous comments in deal threads like this help anybody?

I also don't know what kind of high res photos you are viewing but that seems like a very specific use case. Especially to view 40+ tabs at a time. That just sounds plain inefficient.

You even said yourself it's plenty for most people. I only stated it was more than adequate for me and I wouldn't expect it to be a problem for most home users
I said many, I think most "basic non-tech-savvy people", but very few true power users.

I mean the images weren't that high res, I just mean they weren't tiny. The websites involved were West Elm, CB2, and a handful of other modern furniture sites.

The use case isn't that weird, many if not most power users open a ton of tabs at the same time because the nature of web browsing and information itself is tangential, you're consuming a thread of information, and within in ( this is literally why it's called the web ) are 0-infinity sub-trajectories you can branch out onto, from clicking embedded links to command + T-ing to Google a new term or concept.

That all said I apologize for not reading your comment better, even if I still kind of disagree w/ it. imo 8GB is definitely trash, but if you're committed to OS X it's something that's, for many people, probably *most* of the people commenting on this deal including myself, a trade-off we're willing to make to get the latest-ish Apple hardware for a discounted price.

To be clear, 8GB is total trash in 2021, and definitely just Apple sliding its greasy little penis into our wallets' bodies while holding eye contact, but eh, it is what it is. It's pretty, prestigious trash. <3

This is absolute BS. I have an 8GB mini and it doesn't slow down with over 40 tabs open.
There are some tabs that will use little to no memory, others that will use EXTRAORDINARILY large amounts of RAM.

Images and video have the biggest footprints, try loading up 40 unique pages across a handful of domains for furniture on a high-res screen, I can crash Safari and even OS X on an m1 mac mini effortlessly this way. It probably won't take the whole 40..

What do you mean by didn't outlast?

For comparison: I still have a 2011 Mac mini that works perfectly fine with an older version of macOS as a home server and still can be used for other tasks such as web browsing, emails, light processing, etc.

I have a corporate issued 2017 MacBook Pro that can handle whatever I toss at it with 8GB of memory and integrated Intel graphics. I'll admit it runs warm if I need to do anything intensive but I tend to offload heavy graphical work to an external Blackmagic eGPU.

I have two M1 related Mac's (Air and mini) that both have 16GB's of memory that blow through anything I toss at them and will clearly work well into the future.

So I'm just trying to understand how your Mac was outlasted by a budget laptop when basic Mac's can last for a decade or more without any problem.
Could be keyboard, electrical/wire issues, etc..... Lots of well documented problems for Apple depending on model. Consider yourself lucky you didn't pick up one of the models prone to issues. Same goes for any brand since problems aren't known til later. Both your sample sizes are pretty small, but a single bad experience resonates stronger than a good one.

You may not know what "fast" look like so you don't know when it is actually "slow". Need a reference frame. I have a friend who feel fine with a machine running Celeron and 4gb ram in 2020. You may not be sensitive to the slow down that I or many people could notice. Good for you.
I'm just used to a smoother experience. I can say this owning the M1 Mac Mini for 4 months+, a windows laptop with 16gb and a window desktop with 32gb (running 8th gen i7 cpu which is supposedly slower than the M1 according to benchmark) . The M1 is the only one with occasional hiccups for the exact same user habit.
Same. I can have 200+ tabs open on my 32GB Omen and it never even skips a beat. W/ the m1 however it chokes hard way before I get that deep.

Sweet Jesus what a comment section. What I learned today? Buy 16gb if you're holding on until it dies. Buy 8GB if you're going to upgrade in the near future. Ideally less than 3 years. The arguments made in here applies to MacBook Airs and pros…

Basically I got sold on the 16gb because 5 years it's the sweet spot to upgrade. Heck my 2014 hp laptop with i74700hq still kicks some major ass and it's old af.It boots up in literally 30 seconds and does everything my $2k pc can do EXCEPT render…

At 600 bucks for this thing seems like a steal given the build quality and the future proof aesthetics. Common…. It's a steal but not future proof??? Who knows. In my case I use a laptop as a chrome book basically. Give me that ram!

IMHO just buy the 16gb…
Yes and no. The mini has bottom-barrel speakers, no peripherals, bad bluetooth hardware compared to the laptops and iMacs, and a good handful of other compromises.

It's technically overpriced even at this price point imo but if you want a NEW, current-gen mac this is by far the least you can get away with spending for that, so in that sense it's a good deal.

This + an ultrawide IPS monitor = no need for iMac!
Except that in 2021 OS X looks pretty bad on non-HiDPI screens. Sometimes the text even just looks weird. If you can get a high-enough res one that you can still do pixel scaling however, hell yeah!

Bro I hate to put it so bluntly, but it sounds like you know very very little about computer hardware and software

This stuff is so tiresome. "My Hackintosh that took six hours to set up with a pirated version of OS X is 69% faster!!" and "my 128GB ultra gaming rig is faster than a mac mini, so there!"

If you REALLY want to make your non-M1 mac sing, you can install Windows 10 in Bootcamp. On the same Intel hardware Windows 10 is *markedly* faster than OS X. It'll make your old mac feel like new again even.

there's 3 group of people in these thread.

1. don't know anything about anything, just care if it works.
-no complaints, no issues, great price, thumbs up.

2. think they know everything.
-complaints and spec comparison all the time on why their opinion is absolute. use as many technical terms as possible to prove they really know.

3. know enough to be dangerous.
-try to steal piece meal a bunch of opinions together and create a creative opinion
