What's the difference between using this and just turning tether on for my phone?
The tethered data rate is usually slower than your phone's normal data rate, unless you're paying for a business account, or paying separately for hotspot services using one of these devices.
Just about nothing and very overpriced for what this is.
A hotspot has a single use, better antennas, more reliable connections both for WiFi and cellular, can have many devices connected to it via WiFi, and better security.
I hate using my phone for tethering. I have a $20 unlimited data plan on a hotspot and it's immensely better and faster than using my phone. With that being said, I bought this from Amazon last month for $264 and it's only $269 there now.

Can you provide details on the $20 unlimited data plan for your hotspot?

Been using my multiple phones for over 4ish years when I am mobile as a hotspot, I never needed more than 4 devices connected to it. Range is never an issue.
This is redundant unless you have a cheap phone. I have a Samsung Ultra 5G and no issues with T-Mobile, especially when you can buy hotspots for way cheaper.

Cool, this product is obviously not for you then. All I'm saying is using a phone as a hotspot isn't apples to apples but it depends on your use case (which sounds like yours is minimal). You can't use a phone for cellular backup on a network or connect to a router via Ethernet with a phone among all the other differentiators I mentioned.
This is a better link as there is a 10% off: '10% off offer valid for one-time use on a single item for maximum savings of $100. May be applied to all NETGEAR and Meural products, excluding services and ProAV items. '
But overall, the M1 is like 4 years old and should not still be this expensive. If this was a phone, it would be about 1/4 the original price.

And if you really don't care about scratches/dings on the hotspot, you can get a used one for around $140 on eBay.
That's what I did with my unite explore and it works fine.
I really wish att would let you put a hold on your acct....I don't want to give up my $20 unlimited plan, but working from home I never use it.
