Update 5/25. Someone told me to try again, and indeed it did work for a buck.
This is how it works:
-Let your gamepass expire.
-Buy some cheap Xbox live 12 month cards. I bought Brazil ones and redeemed via VPN(it works).
Redeem 36months max of Xbox live
Sign on and see the advertisement for gamepass. Click on it, but this time you won't pay $1, you have to pay 14.99. Once you convert it over, it will show gamepass at three years until expired. You will pay 14.99 once to convert it. I spent about $128 for 3 years of live and converting to gamepass.

So many free and $1 games but so little time to play. Already enjoyed very nice $1 Playstation Now and still have many free games on Stadia Pro...for 3 months.
