Anyone know enough to say if this is a good deal? Looks way better than the one they had in the warehouse for 220

I think this bike was $300 or $350 last year.

Bought this in the warehouse. Great bike. It's a re-branded Giant. It literally says made by Giant on the box. Similarly spec'd bikes cost $650 new. My friends that know mountain bikes said it was a great buy at $350.

Never heard of Northrock. But seems an ok price for what you get. The components are all bottom tier, but at least they are from real name brands like Shimano, Maxxis, and Tektro.

The Schwinn Axum posted a few days ago is a better bike for the price, but you could do much worse.

I'm not really a mountain biker, but I am looking for a bike that works well both on paved and unpaved roads? is it too heavy for biking on paved roads?

Giant is first and foremost a bicycle manufacturing company that makes bikes to spec for practically every brand out there. A few decades ago, in a addition to making bikes for Trek, Specialized, etc., they set up a distribution network to also sell bikes here under their own name.

So while it may be manufactured in a Giant factory, it is built to the specifications of Northrock (whoever they are) and is not a Giant rebrand.

You are in luck because this is not really a mountain bike. Yes it will be heavy but it will be great as a casual bike around the neighborhood on pavement and some light trail riding. This thing is great for bike paths, including paved and gravel. You will not be going much faster than 20-25mph at the top end, but that does not really matter for most people.

I bought this bike for $349+tax from the warehouse last year. The specs and components seem decent and I loved the bike when I put it together out of the box but my love with the bike didn't last long. The components used on the bike are crap. The groupset is not Altusl only the rear derailleur is Altus. Crankset and front derailleur are Tourney which is the cheapest you can go on Shimano. Breaks are worst than rim brakes. it is like an instant on and off type of braking with no modulation and the worse is they squealing big time. The seat is very uncomfortable. Due to the bike shortage last year which is still continuing, I decided to keep it because I thought the frame and wheels would worth for the money and was looking for to upgrade better groupset and brakes. However; I realized that as time goes by bike started building some rust on cables, chrome pieces, around the bottom bracket, etc even I kept it in the garage all the time and never rode in the rain. then it started producing creaking sounds from other parts and decided to return to Costco even though I knew the I won't be able to find a bike to buy. I'm glad I returned it

I wish Costco carry a similar bike with decent groupset and quality material and sell it for around $600

To compare bang for buck... See what $420 buys at bikesdirect.com.

I've gotten 2 bikes there and they seem to offer good value. Light assembly required, but with a few common household tools (e.g., screw drive, Allen wrenches, etc.), takes a regular Joe about 20 minutes to put a few parts on and ride.

EDIT....must be the result of bike shortages... Took a look at bikes direct just now and $500 doesn't buy nearly as good a quality bike as it did just 2 years ago. Good thing I don't need an upgrade now!

EDIT2. Unbelievable... For the same money as 2-3 years ago, the component group across the board is about 2-3 rankings lower than it used to be (e.g., Shimano altus now verses Sram x7 before).

Totally untrue !
Giant does not make a similarly spec'd mountain bike. This may be made at a Giant factory but using much cheaper components and hence the cheap price. Giant bike priced at 650 is likely Talon2 which is miles better that this .
