The build quality on these is nice, but the hardware is extremely stripped down to the point that it loses its appeal for a lot of people. At least with the mini consoles you could mod and load a ton of extra games on them. This unit is more complicated to mod and doesn't have much memory. They would of been much more popular if they had the memory to load a decent NES library on them, but they don't.
I really like mine and my 5yo loves it even more. I honestly feel this thing would be an even bigger hit if it included SMB2 & 3 as opposed to just 1 & Lost Levels. There really is no reason not to include all of them other than the typical wtf decision by Nintendo.

These things are surprisingly still in stock at a lot of places like Target. I was expecting them to sell out like the mini consoles.
Yeah me too. I wonder if this is a sign of deals to come. But I have a feeling it will be random clearance sales like this. There won't be an official sale from Nintendo.

It's definitely strange to see a Nintendo "collector's piece" have enough of a manufacturing run to keep up with any demand. Or is it the demand on this device just THAT low?
Nonetheless, I remember when Sony Vita PlayStation TV devices were plentiful and getting marked down to $30 at Walmarts. They couldn't give them away... But now they are $250+ on the used market. Initial demand/supply/sales aren't a sign of future value or availability.

That's the last thing Nintendo wants is for people to hack their hardware and put ROMs on them. Whether or not it helps sales is irrelevant to them.

I haven't been inside a Target or Wal-Mart in over a year so I'm guessing the pandemic has had an effect on people seeing them on the shelves and picking one up on a whim. Now that things are returning to normal I'm sure we'll see a small uptick in sales.

I mean, there's probably a good margin on these so they wanted to sell as many as possible. I bought one at release and I was a pretty disappointed at the build quality. I'm sure the LCD is the major cost here but even then, it's hard to gauge the quality of the LCD since it's display some relatively simple graphics.
