I just bought this for a high school graduation/college computer for my son. What do you guys think?

Seems be to be a good laptop. Also, Psref says backlit keyboard, HDMI 1.4, 2 slots of 4gb each( 1 soldered, 1 slot removable -12GB max)

4700U is marginally higher performing than a 5600u. So the 4700u compared to the 5500u is going to be marginally better than that. So double marginally better but still not significant.

Everyone is making a big deal out of zen2 vs zen3. I'm not seeing much of a performance advantage. It's not like one is packing USB4 or thunderbolt.

The processor to buy from this series looks to be the 5850U pro. It's more powerful than most higher wattage processors.

The Ryzen 5000 series CPU is the best you can get in the laptops at this price point. A well rounded budget laptop.

I think it is a good laptop for someone doing regular activities, such as typing up papers, surfing the net, and maybe some light gaming. I would have gotten this for a relative but I purchased them a laptop several months back. And I don't know of anyone who is in need of one.

Yep. Too bad they pair them up with awful screens.

That 4gb of ram soldered makes this a hard sell unless you never plan on upgrading. No USB-C either which isn't ideal, so you're stuck with the barrel connector for charging. Pretty basic machine with a good processor for a nice price, but this is really a "you get what you pay for" situation, and any specific use cases would likely need more ram. This is fine for a student who will take notes and watch videos on it, but they probably can't watch with a friend since TN screens typically have poor viewing angles.

Keep in mind, the 5500U is mostly a 4000 Series Chip rebanded....

https://www.anandtech.com/show/16...-notebooks

The Odd Numbers (5300,5500,5700) are still ZEN2 cores while Even (5600,5800) are zen 3 cores.

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Gee...196.0.html

So this would be a rebranded 4600u.
