is this the trusty corolla that refuses to die? or the Rolls Royce that's opulent for the sake of opulence?
I have the MK4 after having several no-brand and some better brand thermometers. I can toss them all and keep this, because it'll last longer, and will be accurate.

I currently have an earlier version that still works, and a MK4 in a box since I don't want to keep replacing coin cell batteries. But i've done molds for candy and chocolates where temperature has been critical in getting a good, consistent result. So this thing has saved time and money in waste. The customer service was also pretty top notch when things went bad with a refurb that I got (they were happy to exchange it with a new one). That's a part of the price too.
So meats (outside of sous vide) are not where this thing shines. It's easier and vastly more economical to get away with a cheaper instant thermometer or a combination of leave-in and cheaper instant-read.
The unfortunate thing about this thermometer is that the rotating hub isn't a perfect hermetic seal. If the right debris gets rotated in, the internal contacts can corrode over time, making power on detection flaky. There are numerous videos of how to repair this (lift stickers, open up and carefully scrub with iso alcohol) and thermoworks offers to service it for a fee.. but it should really be designed out (like the thermopop, which has no moving parts) on something so expensive.

People value different things. I value quick accuracy and cook a lot so I'm willing to pay for it—though still not at full price or else why am I on SD lol.
It's similar to purchasing a TV: some value OLEDs when a TCL 6 series will get the job done for much less money. Since I don't watch that much TV, I'm happy to go with a TCL 6 and Sony X900 when I know a LG C series or Samsung Q90 will have more accurate contrast and color.
