That said, I got a good one for $30. You have to be very very choosy to spend $200 IMO. At that point you're paying for a Rolex when a Casio would do the job very well.

My experience with Woot is pretty limited, and the last thing i bought was a gimbal that arrived with the factory seal cut. To Woot's credit they paid for the return label and it was a hassle-free return, but I'm wondering if that is typical or if I should expect to receive brand new non-returned merchandise from Woot.

You should expect near new, not necessarily new

High precision measuring. If you model stuff in cadd and 3d print parts, they are a necessity....may not need this caliber of ones but buy once cry once
I use one for measuring electronic parts. You need to know some measurements accurately down to fractions of a millimeter. For precision manufacturing (e.g. pistons in an engine block) you also want very tight tolerances. This will accurately measure the thickness of a single piece of paper.
That said, I got a good one for $30. You have to be very very choosy to spend $200 IMO. At that point you're paying for a Rolex when a Casio would do the job very well.
Lol I don't need a fancy caliper these days, but I have in the past. And once I didn't need the $500 caliper set, I sold it, and I've been abusing $30 versions ever since.
And to be honest, the one I have now is actually really well made for Chinese standards. I used to use versions from Japan, but I don't need to get measurements down to one, one thousandth anymore...
I work with wood now. So If my measurements aren't exact, then I whip out the wood putty.
Anyone else remember what good wood was like? It feels like it's been forever since I could afford a 1x3x4 piece of knitted warped pine. Now I'm raiding dumpsters and eyeballing fruit trees. I'm thiiiiis close to cutting down a sycamore and suffering it's wrath on my respiratory system. Lol.

For actual precision needs (machine work, etc.), a truly good one gives you better repeatability.
