Costco has their Wiz products on sale again.
They have their Wiz LED strips on sale:
$49.99 - $20 Discount = $29.99 +tax with free shipping.

https://www.costco.com/wiz-wi-fi-...72203.html

This starter pack includes the AC adapter and switch + 2m + 2m led strips, so 4m (13ft) total. These are Wifi only, so keep that in mind.
Personally I love these strips. These work with Homekit if you use use the Wiz plugin with Homebridge.
https://www.npmjs.com/package/homebridge-wiz-lan
Adaptive lighting works, which is why I like these strips. I also have their RGB downlights, and they work with the plugin as well with adaptive lighting.

In comparison the Philips Hue strips cost $80 for the 2m base kit, plus $25 PER 1m extension.

Philips Hue 4m of strip: $80 + $25 + $25 = $130
Philips Wiz 4m of strip (this deal): $30

For less money you could get 4 of these starter kits and have a total of 16m of LED strips.

Is there somethign special about Wiz that I don't know about? The strand is only 6ft long. The regular price for Govee Smart LED Strip Lights is $25 for 16ft. link below. They work with my Alexa for sure, maybe other assistants. I don't understand the value statement for this short strip of LEDs.

I have Wiz and Hue in the same household. Both are good depending on the application. I'll keep my comments focused on the hardware aspects (differences in software and WiFi vs ZigBee are also important considerations.)

Hue is undeniably better in most aspects, but is also significantly pricier. The colors are clearly more vibrant, and you have way more control over what the lights can do.

Wiz is a good medium between Hue and the many asian brands that come up on Amazon/slickdeals for like 100' for $2 (exaggerated price). Govee seems to be a big one, and I have tried them myself and wasn't impressed.
In my mind, the biggest thing that Wiz strips have going for them is the brightness. They're rated at 1600lumens/2meters which is the exact same as Hue. How bright are Govee or others you'll find on Amazon? Who knows? In my experience will never list the brightness, because it is significantly lower than those from bigger brands like Wiz and Hue. I've run them side-by-side and it's like... night and day.

Because of this I would never consider using a Govee or other basic strip for general lighting; they just aren't bright enough and you have no idea what you're getting. Also, many of those strips have poor CRIs which I won't get into details about.

However if all you're using the strip for is colored accent lighting, especially at night (for example, behind a TV or couch), then you might consider one of the cheaper strips. The lights don't have to be very bright in a dark room to have a dramatic affect.

The Govee link Slackticus provided shows under "Technical Details" that the Wattage is 18 watts. Converting that to Lumens you get 270 Lumens...so the Govees are not very bright.

Cheers,

Cheers,
In the Govee answers it states it is 1050 lumens. Still not as bright as the Wiz. It looks likes the Wiz is a three chip design, with a warm white, color, and bright white led chips. That's why it would have a higher lumen output, but that is would be with all three chips set to full white. The color output is most likely about the same.

I typed in "Lumens" in the Q&A field on amazon and got this...

Q: How many lumens does the strip provide?
A: The lumen is 1080LM.
By Govee on December 12, 2020
Q: How many lumens do these lights emit?
A: About 650 lumens.
Need more help, please contact us via [email protected]
By Govee on October 12, 2020
Q: Are these SMD 5050 lights? how bright are they and or is a strip in lumens?
A: About 6000 lumen I believe
By Adam Moore on December 11, 2020
Q: Are these bright enough to be used as reading lights? I want to place them under a loft bed to light up the desk area below
A: It is possible the strip light does not be suitable for working as reading light, as the lumens of the light is 540lm.
Need more help, please kindly contact us through Amazon Message Center, so that we could provide a better help.

Just saying...

Honestly I don't care, I'm not buying this and was just trying to help out. The problem is, Amazon allows companies to list multiple products under the same sales listing, which forces customers to ask questions regarding 1 product amongst a slew of multiple product questions and answers. This is actually why I posted what the Tech Details listed and not something from the Q&A.

Cheers,

Agree, I'm not buying either this go around, but I have hue, sylvania, govee, and a bunch of off brand strips. The first three are very consistent with quality, color, and brightness, the generic ones are hit or miss. The 18 watts doesn't tell you how bright the strip it. It just means it has a 12V, 1.5A power supply with it. If they are 5050 leds, they can produce around 22 lumens per chip, 3 per foot time 16.4 feet equals 1082 lumens. Probably where the first answer came from.

How would you compare speed, and the "popcorn effect". Like when you walk in a room, I'm guessing u flip a HomeKit switch? Do the br30 turn on instant like the hue? Do both lights turn on together at the exact same time?

Cheers,
There's no actual direct link between wattage and lumens in LEDs so you can't just do simple conversion like that. You would have to know the wall plug efficiency (ratio of electrical power [current*voltage] in to optical power [determined by the amount of photons generated and the wavelength of the photons] out) of the LEDs as well as the wavelength.

Filament bulbs are essentially just tungsten wire run at a specific current/wattage which glow at a specific color of white when they get hot (which is where we get the concept of color temperature), so there's very little variation between bulbs, and conversion like you just did works well.

However, for LEDs, this direct link no longer exists. There are so many other variables which determine the overall efficiency (of converting current to extracted photons) its impossible to do such a conversion. If you ran some amount of current through various tungsten bulbs, you could guess pretty accurately what the brightness and color would be. However, you could run the same amount of current through 4 different LEDs and get one red, one green, one blue, and one white, and all would appear different levels of brightness depending on the quality of the materials used.

That last sentence brings up the reason MANUFACTURERS MATTER for LEDs. I always see the question "why would I buy hue strips for $10+/ft when I can buy this govee strip for <$1/ft? Because the quality can very drastically, both in terms of color purity and brightness. For filament bulbs, tungsten is tungsten, and there isn't enough variation to care where it came from. For LEDs which use complex semiconductor compounds like GaN and AlGaInP, the quality of these materials (and how they are manufactured) determines the color purity and brightness of the LEDs and can vary widely.

There's definitely more lag involved with Wiz lights. I've heard if you use the Wiz-brand switches it's faster but haven't tested myself. Costco sells a 2-pack sometimes I think. I'm sure it also depends on your WiFi. Hue seem to all turn off/on at the same time and more quickly.

I try to keep hue and wiz in separate areas of my home to avoid problems like this though.
