They are compression socks more than shin guards unless you consider a sock protection. My regular work socks and boots go up to where my calf begins and by the end of the day it would look/feel a little bloated. These socks go up to 2" below the knee which is perfect and my lower legs look more even than bloated (I know, probably Ψ.)
They recommend turning them inside out and washing before the first wear, just plan on spending a couple minutes picking fuzz balls out of the wash tub. Also, not sure why they're so coy about the size they're men's 6-12.
