For those on the Ridgid platform, HD is selling a 2 pack of Octane 3AH batteries with charger and tool bag for $149.00.

Pros:

1. These are 21700 cell batteries which have more peak power than the typical 18650 cell batteries. All of the other Ridgid Batteries are 18650 cells with the exception of the new max output 8ah battery. These are great for short burst tools like Impact Drivers/wrench and drills.

2. These are a battery/charger combo so they are covered by the LSA.

Cons:

1. The Octane battery line is being discontinued so if the batteries die they will like be replaced by the new line of 18650 max output batteries. The replacement batteries will continue to work with all RIDGID 18V tools, as before, but there has been some question as to whether Octane tools will get the power boost that current Octane batteries give them.

Other than the rare clearance sale, one 3AH battery is typically $99.00 so for $50 bucks more you get an extra battery, charger, and the LSA.

Also, these are forward compatible with their new line of tools, so no worries of obsolescence.

Whoa, what? So the octane battery that came with my 1/2 impact wrench that I bought last year is going to become obsolete with their tools?

TL;DR All 18V batteries are compatible with all 18V tools.

They are doing away with the Octane line, but all previous Octane and regular batteries are compatible with their new line. Their new batteries are compatible with their Octane, Gen 5, and standard lines.

Any idea when the new line will show up in stores? I'm curious to see if the older stuff goes on the clearance table right away.

There was a commenter in a previous thread that owned both the 3ah Octane battery, conventional 4ah, and Octane 6ah batteries.

He claimed that the 4ah regular battery actually delivered more torque on his 1/2" impact than the 3ah Octane battery. He also said the 6ah Octane battery offered definitively more torque than either.

Until I see some actual measurements, I remain skeptical if the 3ah Octane battery is truly any better than a normal 4ah battery.

I do not know when they will be filtering into the stores. Home Depot is already selling the batteries, though.

THIS [youtube.com]is worth watching if haven't seen it - from the Torque Test Channel.

The new ridgid batteries are showing Lifetime on the label/box, so you might not need to buy them in a kit anymore. The new ones also look cheaply made now (no rubber protection) and there is a regular 4.0 ah and a Max 4.0 ah battery out.

This is the excellent kind of testing I'm talking about. Unfortunately, he did not test a 3ah Octane vs a 4ah regular battery, so in the end we learned nothing to help answer the question.

Didn't learn anything from it? I'd watch around the 5 - 6 minute mark again. You could always email the guy if you want him to test some specific make and model of something, it sounds like he has the specific torque test rig you care about.

I learned a great deal from it, but not in regards to the topic in this thread. The topic being, "Is the Ridgid 4ah battery actually capable of higher amperage output than the 3ah Octane as some people have claimed". He is definitely doing the proper testing I was hoping for.
