I recommend trying the trial as it doesn't have a time limit. It lets you play all of the base game and the entire first expansion. The limits are you can't trade, use market board, join a free company (guild), and are capped at level 60 (current limit is 80). This game is very story driven but to complete dungeons or boss battles, you'll need to queue up with others (there is a duty finder that will look for players to connect you in/dont need to advertise you need help). While there are squadrons (AI teammates), they are limited on what dungeons they can help you in and it requires a bit to unlock them. A MMO more close to solo is SWTOR as I found most content could be done solo.

I do agree that the base game story is quite a slog to go through. It gets a lot better once you get to Heavensward.
it takes forever (at least 40 hours) to get to the good stuff story-wise so if you have a lot of free time it's a good deal. otherwise I would pass
This is the best MMORPG on the market IMO. The story is amazing, especially the latest expansion and the content is so vast. You can choose to play this mostly solo but will be required to do most dungeons/battle content with other people, but those don't really require any communication and there are systems to match you up automatically with others to do that stuff. You can choose to be social if you want. You can really play most of this game at your own pace as you progress through the story, but of course if you want to do new or end-game content then that stuff is most popular shortly after it's released.

A new update 5.55 was just released today so it's a great time to join, as the game is bustling. The release date for the next major expansion 6.0 end walker was also just announced to be in November so plenty of time to play casually and catch up if you wish.

Anyone comment on how this is if you only play solo? Huge fan of RPGs and Final Fantasy, but don't want to do much grouping and chatting online. Looks like a great price and tempted to check it out. Thx!

Perfect, great information will check out the trial at least to see what I'd be missing. Thanks!

I played it for about 2 years solo for the most part. Great experience and love the world building. I'm a completionist so I need to be a part of a group that takes on the harder trials and bosses. That is going to be nearly impossible to do without a solid and consistent team. But there is so much solo content and I've only had great experiences joining with people I don't know. I just can't get back into it anymore knowing I don't have friends to play with 😢

Lol, I have gaming friends but they won't touch anything that doesn't involve a machine gun. So would be in same boat. Going to try demo first as recommended above, thanks for the fast answers!

Agreed. This is my favorite MMORPG after years of trying out different ones. Only downside is the subscription service but I usually pay for a month every couple of months when I start getting an itch to play the game again.

Same - I've been renewing strictly to keep my properties since I can't afford an irl house I need something to boost my self-esteem. Super excited for the expansion!

This is actually a decent experience if you play solo as far as MMO's go. A lot of the content is geared towards casual play and there's plenty to do, even as a solo player, once you reach the end.
They've recently overhauled the beginning story to get rid of a lot of the unnecessary fluff so that you can get to the later patches faster, so I'd say the initial campaign is a solid 15-20 hours if you take your time.
If you're a fan of Final Fantasy in general, it's a great game with lots of references to other iterations, but even with general gameplay, it tends to keep people entertained. This is a great price with the newest patch coming out in November.
