No idea why people put these things in their house. Unknown brand, no UL or other certs. Especially this product, gets screwed into your outlet so if it malfunctions, burns out etc., you are screwed.

Unless you're buying Chinese crap from the internet, like this item, probably not. The "made in China" stuff you find in a big box store typically has to clear bars like UL, FCC, etc. whereas these Amazon sellers are bypassing all that and can't be held liable for anything that happens.

This is slowly undoing 100+ years of consumer safety. It's all stuff nobody really had to consider before--certs and civil liability and retailer standards kept things in check--so I don't think very many even realize the danger.

Love the design and functionality, but 490 Joules Surge Protection is concerning. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's basically only protecting up to 490 Watts.

If a GFCI's purpose is to prevent electrocution, wouldn't it still trip with a surge protector such as this plugged into it? I intend to put one of these in my bathroom's GFCI outlet. I guess the bad thing here would be that the GFCI's Test and Reset buttons would be covered.

I thought UL was only an insurance concern if it's hardwired, e.g a receptacle, switch, ceiling fan, etc.. I would be surprised if everything you have plugged into a receptacle is UL certified.

UL certs cover a huge range of products. At the very least, if 120VAC runs through it at any stage, you want to see that UL (or ETL) mark. If the product wasn't put before any safety certification, there's no way to know what they skimped out on, and there are a lot of really easy ways to convert line voltage into injury or death.

It also means it's been tested for fire risk and safety. If you're not worried about your house catching on fire then I guess it's not a big deal.

To each their own, all I'm saying is that I would be very surprised if you didn't have one light bulb, lamp or other AC powered device plugged in that is not certified.

Edit: I certainly don't mean to advise against consumer safety of any kind so thank you for clarifying. I do not want my house to burn down the same as the next person. I actually just checked my APC version of this and it is UL certified so it's not like I'm only running unsafe devices. However the CE 9v NiMH battery charger I picked up today is not certified in any way. I probably could have spent double the money for one that is, but it's a risk I'm willing to take.

A Joule is a unit of work, whereas a watt is a measure of power. Joule = N-m or kg-m^2/s^2 Watt = J/s or N-m/s so it would depend on time. So, how long the surge takes place.
