Oh man, that's a scenario I hadn't even thought of. If you bring a broken tool still covered under warranty and they have the identical model in stock, they should offer that to you first.

I haven't opened the box of the most recent replacement yet, and I'm contemplating trying to exchange it for the 2-tool combo @ $199 w/ drill and impact driver, and pay the current difference ($40). I feel like I stand a 50/50 shot with manager's discretion. The problem is my ID will show that at the time I got this replacement, it was on sale for $130 or $140. I'm thinking if I use my passport, maybe it won't show in the system. If I just tell them I got it recently, don't have the receipt, and only present my passport I think I'd have my best chances lol.

Not to mention I got the very first drill for $99, just like yours... so it feels like a Longshot, but we'll see if I work up the nerve lol. It's been in the box for a month for just this reason.

FYI, I have gone through two Kobalt drills. Both were replaced for free. Details below. My biggest home project was redoing my deck... nothing too crazy. Average DIY usage at home, I guess... Thank goodness the Kobalt warranty is freaking awesome! (Just be sure to link the tool to your MyLowe's account... almost screwed myself!) As long as you have everything the tool came with, an ID, along with proof of purchase (receipt, MyLowe's, etc.), they'll replace it for you on the spot.

How the first drill died:

The first time it slowly became harder and harder to remove the bits, until eventually it was damn near impossible without using every muscle fiber in your hands. I did not have the receipt, but after a good amount of convincing and pleading, they agreed to replace it.

First warranty exchange experience:

On this occasion, I was lucky in terms of how the lady processed the warranty exchange. They did the replacement as a return > store credit, then used the store credit to purchase the new one (all done by the lady at the register, not like I had the option of getting a different tool). They then gave me the receipt. This allowed me to add the transaction to MyLowes such that it was a new tool and new warranty.

Second drill death story:

The second replacement, I had been drilling holes using a spade bit one night, and it overheated... and never recovered. After that incident, every time I pulled the trigger on the drill I would have to disconnect and reconnect the battery. The light would flash continuously after letting go of the trigger, and refused to work until I reset the battery. Even if I just had to tighten two screws, I would have to disconnect and reconnect the battery to tighten the second screw.

Second warranty exchange experience:

This time the exchange was processed differently. I wasn't given a receipt, but I got a brand new drill. If this one ends up needing to be replaced, I'm not expecting another replacement.

Moral of the story: Save your receipt, or link the purchase to your MyLowe's account!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂
Your first breakage (chuck) happened in a sourced part that is very high quality. I forget exactly what company, but there is a video of that guy who takes apart tools to see what went into them and he was very impressed by their chuck choice.

Tools are a lot like computers, the companies do some engineering and design, but switches, battery cells, chucks, motors, etc. are all engineered and built by other companies. People who complain that "acer sucks" don't really understand that acer just slaps together a bunch of parts, does qa, distributes, and supports that blob of parts. If a hard drive fails, it isn't really acer's fault; in that case they act more like squaretrade.

With the 1/2 inch drill i have cut 6" holes through 1.5" of wood, tons of auger bit holes, etc. I do however let it rest; the insides might be metal, but at the end of the day there is a lot of plastic holding things together, and heat is very bad for lubrication and plastic.

If you have to lie to make a return, it sounds like fraud. Just be honest with them about what you'd like to do and maybe they'll work something out for you.

How do you link the purchase of Kobalt tools to the Lowes account?

If you forget to tell the cashier your phone number at checkout, you can add the receipt manually using the app and scanning the bar code on the receipt.

If you don't have your receipt, there's still hope. Try working with customer service to locate your purchase in the system. I'm pretty sure if you have the same credit/debit card, they should be able to locate the transaction.

Kobalt is made by GreenWorks. So if you like GreenWorks you should like Kobalt. I just have never had luck with GreenWorks tools.

I'm pretty anal about docs. I've got the receipt right here. So just scan it with the Lowes app?

That is true for the 40, 60, and 80v yard and garden tools.

I believe that their 24v power tools are made by Chervon.

How do I choose the tool? It just automatically puts the leaf blower in the cart and I can't change it

What's the return value of the batteries? Any way to return the batteries and get the tool at a discount?

Only tool that I want is a right angle impact wrench and it seems like they are not lowering the price like last year when it was $99 with battery and charger. I might had bought this if I could get right angle. I have many use for it but I will live with my cordless impact and ratchet for now.

Agree this should be getting more traction, but I also have tools from each brand and prefer Ryobi overall, though it varies tool to tool. Mainly I'm very disappointed with the Kobalt brushless drills compared to Ryobi and Bosch brushless models. They are slow, weak and have awful trigger lag. The reciprocating saw (specifically the smaller one-handed model) is also pretty meh. I really like the Kobalt circular saw and oscillating tool though.
