Terms have changed, the original Pixel is the only one that will get unlimited Original Quality for life. The Pixel 3/XL will get unlimited Original Quality until January 31, 2022, after that it's going to be compressed (1-2 MB) with their new marketing term "Storage Saver".

Original Quality after the mentioned date will count against your account storage, so it would be best to just use their unlimited Storage Saver.

The rest of the phones including their 'a' variants get unlimited Storage Saver as of now.

As for ownership, it doesn't matter if you're the 5th owner of an original Pixel, as long as it's linked to your Google account, that specific model will get you unlimited original quality... only if uploaded from that device.

Even for a 3 year old phone, you won't be able to find a better brand new phone at the $200 price point.

Maybe it's just me, but this sounds like it would be way too much of a nuisance to limit one's self to 30-40% battery before having to think about plugging in again, even if it is for ~20 mins.

This probably works well if you're indoors a lot but it sounds like a hassle to worry about battery health if you're someone who is often outdoors.

Also, it probably only makes sense to do this if you're keeping your devices 4-5 years or more. I've used plenty of phones for 3 years while charging nightly and the batteries were still decent towards the end. Not great, but decent.

Smart move. CalyxOS.org has worked out really well for both my P3 and P4.

What if I have an original Pixel and a iPhone both linked to the same Google Photo account. What about photos backed up to Google Photo from my iPhone? Thanks.
There are some guides online that will show you how to use your OG pixel as an FTP server so you can upload photos from any device.

This article also talks about another option you can use via folder syncing:

Alternatively, Amazon offers free unlimited original quality photo storage for prime members with the caveat that if you cancel your prime membership, you will only have 6 months (I think) to transfer your photos out before they are deleted.

I use Amazon and find that it's extremely easy since they have a desktop app for Mac and both iOS and Android, so my photos are always synced up between all of my devices.

dang, I suffer every time I use my Moto G6 Play. Why can't they make a $ 200 phone that's snappy enough? I don't care about all other things, don't need anything premium, but please make it snappy. Idk if it's the CPU or the RAM or whatever, but even chrome gets sluggish

You know, I was kicking myself for buying the Pixel 3 exactly one month ago from them on sale for $150 instead of waiting and now getting the $180 XL/64, but when I see that notch I can't help but wonder if the usable screen size really all that much larger than the Pixel 3?

Edit: looks like old posts on Reddit show the Pixel 3XL with notch disabled is the same height as the pixel 2XL which is effectively a 6" screen with extra space around the notch instead of a 6.3" screen as they advertise. The non-XL Pixel 3 is a notchless 5.5"

When will the Pixel 4a +5g or the 5 go on sale? I'm tired of seeing all these outdated phones going on sale.

The real caveat is that videos storage isn't free and some ios pictures (live photos) count as video.

If you are OK with just having stills backed up and throwing out the movies you are "Good to go"
