Original Quality after the mentioned date will count against your account storage, so it would be best to just use their unlimited Storage Saver.
The rest of the phones including their 'a' variants get unlimited Storage Saver as of now.
As for ownership, it doesn't matter if you're the 5th owner of an original Pixel, as long as it's linked to your Google account, that specific model will get you unlimited original quality... only if uploaded from that device.
This probably works well if you're indoors a lot but it sounds like a hassle to worry about battery health if you're someone who is often outdoors.
Also, it probably only makes sense to do this if you're keeping your devices 4-5 years or more. I've used plenty of phones for 3 years while charging nightly and the batteries were still decent towards the end. Not great, but decent.

I'd say the A71 surpasses the old Pixel 3 in many areas despite you labeling it a "low tier" phone. Where it doesn't, it may not matter depending on what you do. For me, better/bigger screen, expandable storage, better cameras, 5G, more RAM, more cameras, etc.
Hate my iPhone so I'm getting this until the Pixel 6 line is announced. Loved my Pixel 2 XL, so this should hold me over at least another 6 months. Price is definitely right.
This is a GREAT DEAL. Learn how to unlock and root Android phones if you can't deal with not having upgrades in about a year.
I bought this deal last month when woot had the new unlocked pixel 3XL not pink 128GB for $255.
I've had my pixel 3 (not XL) for a couple years and love it, but I'm bumping up against the 64GB right as unlimited photo storage is going away. I'm secretly hoping that google releases the 5A sometime soon so I can return both of these 3XL phones and upgrade now that 128GB is the standard on 4A/5A.
