Original Quality after the mentioned date will count against your account storage, so it would be best to just use their unlimited Storage Saver.
The rest of the phones including their 'a' variants get unlimited Storage Saver as of now.
As for ownership, it doesn't matter if you're the 5th owner of an original Pixel, as long as it's linked to your Google account, that specific model will get you unlimited original quality... only if uploaded from that device.
This probably works well if you're indoors a lot but it sounds like a hassle to worry about battery health if you're someone who is often outdoors.
Also, it probably only makes sense to do this if you're keeping your devices 4-5 years or more. I've used plenty of phones for 3 years while charging nightly and the batteries were still decent towards the end. Not great, but decent.

I'm on the fence on whether I should return the device. I see the value in getting the unlimited storage. But if quality itself isn't great then I'm not sure what's the point.
Lastly I'm not sure if I want to go the route of pushing all my uploads from other devices through the pixel. While it's hoops to jump through it could easily get caught and shutdown by Google at a later date.
hackers don't care about single users majority of the time. and as long as you aren't using sketchy apps and downloading random apk you are going to be safe majority of the time.
i would be more worried about google/samsung whomever having access to your location, info, tracking everything and their servers getting hacked than a security flaw/update for your phone.
screw google samsung for pushing updates that slow down your phone, more bloatware, tracking software, and kill your battery.
pixel 3 is a great back up phone, or a dummy phone in my case to have for android auto. wish pixel 4a was 200.

We have home movies from the 80s and 90s that were converted from Hi8 to MP4 and they are each one hour long and about 2 to 3 gb each. They are all on Photos and don't count against the storage and Photos does the face recognition on the videos and search like beach and forest or Disney.
You can even automate the upload using sync methods rather than drag and drop as this guy lays out:

My Pixel never leaves the home. Its sole purpose is to upload. Why risk taking it out and break it. Just keep that puppy doing it's sole job: unlimited full resolution storage on Photos.
i should have added, don't connect to public wifi, click on suspicious emails, etc. but that's user stupidity and not anything security updates can fix. YOU CAN NOT FIX STUPID.
granted IG/Whatsapp/Youtube are used to hack you, but that's more app developers issue, not user.
I would never recommend any samsung phone because of the bloatware and performance drain after updates. Oneplus however, is so nice. just upgraded to OP8P, never going back to samsung ever again.

It's not very difficult for google to identify the content was not generated / taken by the pixel. It can be considered as violation of TOS and shutdown.
I've heard horror stories of people unable to get in touch with a human from google to get any support.
Right now I have a delegate email account that I'm unable to recover. I know the password but apparently the device I log in from makes google unhappy. And I have no way to recover it because even my recovery email is locked up!
This would make sense if you also maintained offline backup and stored your google photo uploads on a new account. So in the rare chance you get shutdown you're only going to lose that account but not your data.
