Terms have changed, the original Pixel is the only one that will get unlimited Original Quality for life. The Pixel 3/XL will get unlimited Original Quality until January 31, 2022, after that it's going to be compressed (1-2 MB) with their new marketing term "Storage Saver".

Original Quality after the mentioned date will count against your account storage, so it would be best to just use their unlimited Storage Saver.

The rest of the phones including their 'a' variants get unlimited Storage Saver as of now.

As for ownership, it doesn't matter if you're the 5th owner of an original Pixel, as long as it's linked to your Google account, that specific model will get you unlimited original quality... only if uploaded from that device.
Even for a 3 year old phone, you won't be able to find a better brand new phone at the $200 price point.
Maybe it's just me, but this sounds like it would be way too much of a nuisance to limit one's self to 30-40% battery before having to think about plugging in again, even if it is for ~20 mins.

This probably works well if you're indoors a lot but it sounds like a hassle to worry about battery health if you're someone who is often outdoors.

Also, it probably only makes sense to do this if you're keeping your devices 4-5 years or more. I've used plenty of phones for 3 years while charging nightly and the batteries were still decent towards the end. Not great, but decent.

What's the point to get a 3 year old phone for $200? Get a Visible Mobile Pixel 4a for about the same price. 6GB RAM makes huge difference.

$336 not including taxes isn't really "about the same price", plus you're locked to visible\Verizon vs this Pixel 3XL being unlocked for use on any provider that it has tiebacks and VOLTE support for. Pixel 3XL has a higher capacity battery too, bigger screen and arguably faster overall processing\GPU performance.

4a has a real headphone jack though.

The visible 4a comes unlocked. It comes with a $150 debit card after 2 months service. So it is nearly the same price with a couple of small hoops to jump through. Probably worth it for an extra year or two of updates.

Sorry, but this is a terrible advice unless you don't care about security updates which will stop coming in a few months, making you a potential target for hackers. Android devices are not like Windows machines with "one size fits all." Once the manufacturer stops releasing security updates you are supposed to throw it out. Sucks, I know, but Google and friends want to force you into buying a new phone every 2-3 years. Samsung is currently leading the pack with the promise of four years of security updates. Apple does at least 5 years.

Does anyone that has service with Cricket been able to get a Pixel 3 activated in last week or two? I had a family member that got hers in April and it works. That said, it is not on the BYOD list I see. I have seen a number of posts online the last couple of days where they said their BYOD stopped working or they took the sim card out and when reinstalled phone would not work (and their account was suspended, then when they called were told phone no longer supported). I would prefer to get the Pixel 3 due to cost, wireless charging, unlimited storage at original quality, etc. I am just worried they won't let me activate it or it will randomly stop working. I prefer not to have to shell out for the 4a. but will if I have to.

I got a mint condition OG PixelXL 128G from eBay. I don't really see the point of the phone because the quality of the photos is barely meeting the quality of current flagship devices. The videos are certainly bad. I can clearly see a blur with barely any movement in the videos.
I'm on the fence on whether I should return the device. I see the value in getting the unlimited storage. But if quality itself isn't great then I'm not sure what's the point.
Lastly I'm not sure if I want to go the route of pushing all my uploads from other devices through the pixel. While it's hoops to jump through it could easily get caught and shutdown by Google at a later date.

Security/Firmware updates are overrated, unless imo.
hackers don't care about single users majority of the time. and as long as you aren't using sketchy apps and downloading random apk you are going to be safe majority of the time.

i would be more worried about google/samsung whomever having access to your location, info, tracking everything and their servers getting hacked than a security flaw/update for your phone.

screw google samsung for pushing updates that slow down your phone, more bloatware, tracking software, and kill your battery.

pixel 3 is a great back up phone, or a dummy phone in my case to have for android auto. wish pixel 4a was 200.

You're basically expressing your personal opinion which does not align with the opinion of most security experts. Phones can get hacked through bluetooth, browsers, links from unsolicited text messages and emails, etc. The longer your phone goes without updates the higher the chance it will be exploited because new vulnerabilities are being discovered on a daily basis. I think $200 is way too much for a dummy phone when you can get a pretty decent daily driver from Samsung or One Plus.

Any video or photo uploaded from the Pixel XL does so at full resolution and does not count against your storage. You can use the Pixel as a channel to upload from your Nikon and it's full resolution. They can be RAWs. You can upload a full movie though that Pixel.

We have home movies from the 80s and 90s that were converted from Hi8 to MP4 and they are each one hour long and about 2 to 3 gb each. They are all on Photos and don't count against the storage and Photos does the face recognition on the videos and search like beach and forest or Disney.

You can even automate the upload using sync methods rather than drag and drop as this guy lays out:

https://www.androidpolice.com/202...ixel-free/

My Pixel never leaves the home. Its sole purpose is to upload. Why risk taking it out and break it. Just keep that puppy doing it's sole job: unlimited full resolution storage on Photos.

my statement factual, it isn't opinion. if you don't download sketchy apps you are safe.

i should have added, don't connect to public wifi, click on suspicious emails, etc. but that's user stupidity and not anything security updates can fix. YOU CAN NOT FIX STUPID.

granted IG/Whatsapp/Youtube are used to hack you, but that's more app developers issue, not user.

I would never recommend any samsung phone because of the bloatware and performance drain after updates. Oneplus however, is so nice. just upgraded to OP8P, never going back to samsung ever again.

Yeah this sounds like a great idea and I saw some posts on reddit months ago and this article as well. However I'm just unsure if I want to risk shutdown by google.
It's not very difficult for google to identify the content was not generated / taken by the pixel. It can be considered as violation of TOS and shutdown.
I've heard horror stories of people unable to get in touch with a human from google to get any support.
Right now I have a delegate email account that I'm unable to recover. I know the password but apparently the device I log in from makes google unhappy. And I have no way to recover it because even my recovery email is locked up!

This would make sense if you also maintained offline backup and stored your google photo uploads on a new account. So in the rare chance you get shutdown you're only going to lose that account but not your data.
