Original Quality after the mentioned date will count against your account storage, so it would be best to just use their unlimited Storage Saver.
The rest of the phones including their 'a' variants get unlimited Storage Saver as of now.
As for ownership, it doesn't matter if you're the 5th owner of an original Pixel, as long as it's linked to your Google account, that specific model will get you unlimited original quality... only if uploaded from that device.
This probably works well if you're indoors a lot but it sounds like a hassle to worry about battery health if you're someone who is often outdoors.
Also, it probably only makes sense to do this if you're keeping your devices 4-5 years or more. I've used plenty of phones for 3 years while charging nightly and the batteries were still decent towards the end. Not great, but decent.

It's not very difficult for google to identify the content was not generated / taken by the pixel. It can be considered as violation of TOS and shutdown.
I've heard horror stories of people unable to get in touch with a human from google to get any support.
Right now I have a delegate email account that I'm unable to recover. I know the password but apparently the device I log in from makes google unhappy. And I have no way to recover it because even my recovery email is locked up!
This would make sense if you also maintained offline backup and stored your google photo uploads on a new account. So in the rare chance you get shutdown you're only going to lose that account but not your data.
Pixel gives you human support. A lot of people don't know that. I have 1.6tb of just photos/videos on my account. For about 2 years my Photos storage was at 4 gb. Then about 2 months ago it shot up. Over that last several weeks, only photos from a Pixel 3 had been uploaded so nothing should have changed.
I stupidly asked Pixel human support what went wrong. They looked and advised me an engineer would need to take a look.
About one week later my storage returned to normal at 4gb.
Yes, I was waiting for a notice. But that's my experience. They analysed a 1.6tb photo account, fixed it, and I am back in business.
I'd say the A71 surpasses the old Pixel 3 in many areas despite you labeling it a "low tier" phone. Where it doesn't, it may not matter depending on what you do. For me, better/bigger screen, expandable storage, better cameras, 5G, more RAM, more cameras, etc.

a71 screen with 393ppi vs Pixel 3 at 442. Speakers? Samsung a71 has a single bottom firing speaker vs Pixel 3 with dual speakers.
And if you care that much about the built-in speakers then by all means spend more money on an old phone. I believe most people use earbuds/headphones when listening to music or watching movies.
I never said that every aspect of the A71 was better than this Pixel 3 XL. I pointed out that many of the features of the A71 are better than the Pixel 3 XL and the A71 has some important features that are missing altogether on the XL. I also said that it depends on your priorities.
For me, the A71 is a great phone, and looks and feels like a flagship phone, especially considering I saved about 90% of the cost of a flagship.
And if you care that much about the built-in speakers then by all means spend more money on an old phone. I believe most people use earbuds/headphones when listening to music or watching movies.

Pixel 5 has mid range chipset
Pixel 6 will be expensive, over $1000, weak, or both It's not coming out for a long time. It wont reduce in price for years after that.
Pixel 5 will not be reduced for years, like all phones in 2021 there are no reductions. The cost of everything has tripled in two weeks. There are zero phone deals ever now.
This is a very good deal. At least, what passes for one in 2021.

6 trillion dollars of covid stimuus inflation just got pumped into the economy, and more is coming constantly. Most people are on $1000 a week unemployment and food stamps, buying up everything they can as fast as they can. A nvidia video card is $2000, A PS5 is $1000, you cannot get either.
Phones are NOT going on sale for many years, if ever. I've been looking for a S21 and there are no deals that dont require signing with a carrier for a small discount.
