Depends on your use case. A desktop consumes more electricity, larger, noisier, but is more powerful for desktop applications. Pi's are opposite plus has GPIO header for projects and expansion HATS.

The Aluminum edition case appears to be a remarked FLIRC case, which was the original Pi passive cooled case, but IMHO the newer Argon Neo, iUniker, and Geekworm passive cases are superior. They tend to have contact sinks for chips other than the cpu on the Pi that produce heat, and gaps for GPIO and camera ribbons. Search "pi 4 passive aluminum case" on Amazon for examples.

It's overkill for the pi4, but pihole [pi-hole.net] is amazing. It's a network wide spam filter. No more ads on mobile

I'm pretty sure that's what they were trying to say with the "overkill" part, though to be fair they didn't word it well.

How many USB hard drives can be hooked to this for Chia Farming?
4 ports. You need 100TB minimum to farm. 4 DAS should work.

Are any of the options a good deal to run a media/backup center? Have a 12TB external disk I could use for storage.
I run Ubuntu Server with Plex Media Server and a Samba share for Kodi expansion and it works exceptionally well.

If you have an ONVIF outdoor security system give Shinobi a shot.

Been using one of these guys for streaming my music collection via Plex. Best thing ever. As others have mentioned buy a used PC if you're streaming video that needs to be transcoded. Pi 4 can transcode but it's very limited. But transcoding my music from FLAC is overkill so I have my main server and then this little guy so it's always on and I have less power consumption.

Also cost and size. I have mine on a shelf hidden behind one of my surround sound speakers.

Again there is no desktop you can buy anywhere close to these. You could maybe get an off lease celery desktop for 200 bucks but this would be better than that in every way.
Late last year, I was looking at ARM SBCs to use as a home media server (Jellyfin). However, I found that used business desktop computers ARE dirt cheap. Much lower than $200.

On (the big auction site) I scored an Elitedesk 800 SFF with an i5-4590, 8GB of RAM and a 2TB hard disk. All this for $110, and there were plenty of similar options when I was searching.

Something to think about for anyone who's project doesn't need to be small, low power, or require the expansion header on the Pi.

How does pihole intercept DNS queries by e.g. your phone if those queries are done over DoH (DNS over https)? That part I don't quite understand as everything seems to move to DoH lately.
You can't, but no Android or iOS device absolutely requires DoH. You set your DNS server to the pihole static IP on your local network and from there your pihole can forward those requests over DoH. If you are lazy and only care about ad blocking, for iOS/Windows devices you can go into wifi settings and set DNS server to AdGuard's free adblocking DNS service (94.140.14.14). For Android you can use DNS over TLS and set domain to dns.adguard.com. Only issue is iOS devices on mobile network (i.e. not wifi), you'd have to run a VPN. On Android you can also install open source DNS66 app from Github and you can locally filter all DNS requests without sending your domains to AdGuard, which promises "We do not preserve any personal data or log your activity".

Has anyone used this to make a Pi-hole build? I don't need a 64gb sd card (I have plenty) but I'm wondering if there are cheaper Pi-hole options that include the enclosure; thoughts?

Media server is fine. Be cautious about the backup part. Regular external hard disk is not designed for running 24x7. I lost data after using my seagate hard drive as backup server after 5 years

You're missing the mark here. There are so many other purposes for these things these days. I just made a sick openwrt router out of one that blows any router you can buy commercially out of the water. If you buy these things for purposes based applications they are right on the money. I have 3 older ones clustered together as a neat compiler. These are all way more capable for streaming than your average roku or fire stick. Now I agree that some of these allocations are overkill but the company has been very good at adding options rather than limiting the consumer to just 1 version you have the option of a stripped down version all the way up to the newest 4 with 8gb of ram. Buy with a plan and purpose and you won't go wrong!! I have the newest version as a desktop replacement in my workshop running Linux like a champ and it's great as a desktop replacement for my simple work shop needs like web browsing, watching streams and running my CNC machine.
How does it work for 4K steaming? Still better than the latest chromecast or fire tv 4k?
Also what remote are you using?

Has anyone setup their pi to be a DNS server? I'm curious if this is the way to go if I want to make it so that not even my internet provider (comcast) would have access to my internet data like which sites I visit?
