This thing is great. I just picked one up a few weeks ago on the last sale. I know it seems a bit unnecessary but it is a total game changer when road riding. It does a great job of alerting you to cars approaching. It truly makes cycling safer. Now I won't ride without it!

100% in agreement with you. It let's me know when I need to look at my helmet mounted mirror and assess the vehicles approaching from behind me, so I can keep my attention to the front more of the time instead of constantly looking in my mirror.

I agree, this new unit is awesome. I was going to buy the previous Garmin Varia. That one needed a Garmin cycle computer to work. This new Varia RTL515 is a stand alone product with a basic app and doesn't need an expensive Garmin Edge head unit to work. The way I use it is I use my iPhone with a Quad Lock case mounted on my road bike. I synced the Varia RTL515 with a free cycling map app I found called "Ride with GPS". It displays the oncoming cars from the varia 515 just like the Garmin units do. It uploads my data to Strava and does it seamlessly. Saved myself the $500-600 by not having to buy a Garmin computer.

When you receive a warning of a car approaching, how far back is the car?

I thought this was a gimmick and a $30 light would be just as good, but the radar has been a game changer. Worth every penny.

I own one of these. It's not worthwhile at any price if you ride in the city. It just gets muted 99.9% of the time. Maybe quiet roads yes. That's it. Also they need to come up with a better mounting system. The light is insanely bright though.

My usage for this radar: almost 100% of the time it is muted. I take the whole road and use the radar to let me know when to move back into the shoulder. L

Audible alerts at 153 yards back are unnecessary and just make you a wuss riding 3 inches from the curb 99.9% of the time if you are in the city.

This is the way to go if you don't have a garmin head unit and want the on screen display for the varia.

So when we see 'cycling' do we mean bicycling or motorcycling? Maybe both?

I have a Wahoo and it displays the Varia data. I agree with the previous comments that it works great. Not mentioned is that it shows multiple cars if more than one, and also indicates if they are approaching quickly. Doesn't show the speed of the cars, just turns red or something if approaching at a high speed.
