I've had the Midea version for a year and its not the best. It is quieter than almost all window mount units, but it has a tendency to make weird sounds that are normally drowned out, so if you're picky about sound when you're trying to sleep (like I am) that could be a problem.

In terms of actual issues, by the end of last summer the blower fan started to make a horrible squeaking sound. I didn't do anything with it at the time, but when I set it up again this week it was the first thing I heard on startup, and sounded even worse. After some disassembly I determined it was the bearing on the fan's motor. They go for like 10 for $10 on Amazon, and another $20-30 for a tool to remove the old one, or you could replace the whole motor. The actual replacement motor unit from Midea is about $50, but backordered until October. I took a chance and bought one on eBay that's making its way to me from China now.

The unit likes to disappear from the app a lot, and its kind of a pain to link them together.

The 8000 BTU has a loud beep whenever you press any button or perform anything in the app. Like, loud enough I can hear it almost anywhere in the house loud. When I had the unit apart to get to the motor I took the time to fill up the little speaker with super glue and add some tape on top to dampen it some, which helped. The higher BTU units can disable the sound via a setting in the app.

The air flap sometimes needs help opening all the way up.

FYI: I don't believe Danby is a true manufacturer of anything....just a brand label, so it's probably the exact same as the Midea version.

Speaks volumes of the quality of this AC unit when multiple people report component issues within a year of ownership! yikes

As an FYI, CR rates the 8000 btu Midea u shape (which could even be a patented design) an 87 out of 100 and it is the second highest rated a/c in their room a/c tests... only beat out by another larger 12k btu Midea scoring 90.

This "Danby" brand has to be the Costco specific version of the Midea. I'm guessing to keep other retailers happy, Midea probably off-branded this for Costco in order to prevent direct price competition with other retailers selling the Midea brand. Also, for those that do not know, Midea is based in China... not just made there, headquartered there.
And Carrier has a partnership with Midea so I would like to believe these are pretty good AC units based on most of the reviews.

This deal is live right now, not expired anymore. Slickdeals needs a report not expired tab option.

Amazon seems to have the Midea in and out of stock at the same price.
I had the 8000 BTU in my cart yesterday and by the time I made up my mind it was sold out.
But then the 10,000 BTU model was in stock at $419 so I got that instead.

I only need the 8,000 BTU for my little room (my office) but going to go ahead and keep my amazon order since it has the same delivery time and I trust the Midea brand just a bit more as it has been tried and true reviews and used by so many people.

Also personally I think the front grill looks better on the Midea, though its my office so nobody is going to see it.

But check Amazon a couple of times a day, you might see it come in stock.

Excited to get this, running a full server rack and my computer setup the office gets hotter than the rest of the house, and I can let the central AC go into ECO mode during the day and only cool the room I need saving me a little bit of money. Though I am sure it would take YEARS to actually make up the cost savings vs the purchase cost. So its much more about being comfortable in my office.

imagine all the information that Midea & Danby is stealing with these smart units. Like the temps of your house!
They will also be able to know that you turn it on when it's a warm day!

10,000 BTU is a mismatch for a little room. 10,000 BTU is appropriate for 400-500 square feet so like 20' x 20' to 25' x 20'. If you don't match the BTU to the room it will cool the room fast but leave it humid.

Is this a good-sized unit to use with a generator in case a hurricane knocked out power? When I say good size, I mean not too big or not too small to cool one room.

Asking for a friend. A friend named me.

How is the noise difference compared to a regular window unit? I have never had an issue mounting or securing a small 8-10k window unit, but they're damn loud in the room it's in.

For those that purchased, don't forget to check your local utility provider website for energy rebates. My local provider is offering $40 rebate for all qualifying A/C units (including this one).

Does it work for sliding windows ?
Do you think sliding window will fit the notch which is oriented for things to slide in from the top? I wish there was a side notch version. I'm on the same boat as you

The math of how much will this load up the Hurricane is the same as traditional window AC. This style doesn't consume any more power than the device in the same class
