These mats will damage hardwood more than just putting the proper wheels like these [amazon.com]on your office chair.

Small particles of sand gets under these, sticks to the bottom and rolling across the mat basically slowly sands the finish off the floor.
Is that also an issue if sand gets stuck to the wheels?

It doesn't on those wheels because the edge that contacts the floor is so narrow. I have red oak stained dark walnut brown, so you see everything on this floor.

Floors were refinished two years ago and not a scratch under my chair.

I previously had a mat and the floor had significant damage beneath the mat after a few years.

You'll eventually wear through the finish of a hardwood or laminate floor.
Get urethane or rubber wheels for your office chairs on hardwood, they are excellent and should not damage the finish unless they get grit embedded in them. Lots of options on amazon. Only negative is you can't push against anything or you're sailing across the room. Silent, soft, protective, but a little too smooth rolling. I have them on a Case chair and a Herman Miller.

Would I need something like this for an engineered vinyl floor?

Not here in Jersey
Just picked one up this evening in SW OH. Awkward to put on the shopping cart. Nice there are no spikes on them. For $13 it's a good product. Chair rolls good on it vs that cheap carpet I have.

I got this a couple months ago, didn't work for my setup and it already had a tear in one side from my wheels. Gave up and got roller blade wheels instead

This is usually $19.99, good slickdeal but I don't know where the 39.99 comes from.

Is there a way to check if your local store has then in stock other than making a trip there?
Call and press the number for administrative office. give them the item number. I do it all the time.

That would have been a much cheaper option for me. These cheap plastic mats allow the chair to sink in and older folks in the house can't get them to roll. Ended up buying a nice polycarbonate chair mat that is like rolling on glass. So much better. But, it cost $80

Amazon Basics Polycarbonate Office Carpet Chair Mat, With Lip, for Thick Carpets, 47" x 53" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RRD1...UTF8&psc=1
I've been using a vinyl woodgrain look chair mat on wood floor from Staples or Office Depot for over 10 years. I think sink in problem only happens on medium-high pile carpet.
My wife is using the Ikea one which seems doing good as well, $20 for a few inches larger than Costco's one.
And in fact, I don't want to roll like on glass, I like the mat has some traction for better rolling control.
The Ikea one even has a textured surface.

A sheet of 3/8" is about $45 locally. Viewed from the perspective of buying for use as a chair mat, that price doesn't seem out of line compared to the prices of some of the higher end chair mats.

That being said, it is highway robbery that a sheet of 3/8" plywood costs $45 these days.
I wouldn't use 3/8" as chair mat unless I will level roll off the mat. (might be on high pile carpet, but the product here is for solid floor)

dumb question: why do you need an office chair mat for a hardwood floor? isn't hardwood smooth enough for a wheeled chair to roll across?
To protect it from scuff marks and spills.

Just an FYI, these are meant for hardwood, or carpet that is not plush in anyway. It has no "spikes" on the bottom to hold onto carpet.
I use it on shag. It has ridges and does move slightly, but I like to vacuum around my work desk anyhow so I usually just pick it up, vacuum and replace ever so often.
