What's the difference between and the old double cash back Citicard and which card is better?

Urm … one is a 5% cashback on only $500 max purchase only 1 category while the other is a flat 2% on all purchases no cap

FYI Citi is one of the few large companies that are still choosing to continue doing business in Russia, thereby supporting the daily atrocities taking place, both in Russia (through political repression) and Ukraine, through their taxes paid to Putin's war machine.

There are alternatives. I've just switched to the Wells-Fargo 2% unlimited cash back card. Fidelity has another one.

When signup bonuses are taken into account, this is overall likely a lousy choice for most people, except maybe for people who want just one or two credit cards and never plan to get any more.

Its $200 signup bonus is woefully dwarfed by the many cards offering $500, $1000, even more in signup value. And its 5% on one category -- max $25/month -- is not all that exciting when you take into account the 2% no-fee cards available.

So imagine a spend of $500 a month on the 5% category, and $1000/month on other stuff.

With this card, that's ($500 x 5%) + ($1000 x 1%), or $35/month
With a 2% card, you'd earn $30/month.

$5/month isn't worth giving up a huge signup bonus for.

Can you point me to the $500 and $1000 bonus cards; without annual fees. Thanks.

I was in the market for a new credit card for a cashback bonus and this one seem pretty good. This fits my needs that 5% (even if it caps at $500 per billing cycle) is pretty good for me just use it for one category which probably be gasoline for me.

The only thing that kind of surprised me was I wasn't instantly approved first time this has happened said to wait 7 to 10 business days. I decide to just call the # got nothing to lose. I called asked me some questions to verify and was approved. I am just going to use this for one thing either dining out, gasoline, or grocery shopping. Great overall card honestly!

For credit card signups? Tons do. Chase, Amex, Cap One, etc... required spend is higher than $750 though.

Do those card have annual fee?

some do, some don't. And some are both (have a fee, but it's waived the first year when you do the bonus)

Though I'm always baffled by people who are like "I'm not gonna take $1000 in free money if there's a $95 fee required"

That's still $905 in free money. (or considerably more than that when used for travel in most cases).

Please read again. The max is 5% of your FIRST $500 spent than 1% thereafter each month. So $25.00 max a month for 5% reward then 1% on everything else for that month.

Yes. That is what they said. Hence the part about not being able to do 1 big purchase in that quarter.

Assume Amex MR points are worth 1.7 cents each (I think closer to 2, but anyway)
TL;DR
Sure, for those who fly, stay in nicer hotels included in the points redeemable options, and don't mind the AFs.
----------------------------------
After running some numbers for my situation, I can pay OOP for the cost of gas and rental car fees when driving, or cheap airfare when flying (i.e. Allegiant), and less expensive hotels or Air B&Bs (nice enough for us) and have more leftover cash back or cc points by getting cashback or points on all expenditures I make, with my no fee 2% every day card, or category bonus 5% cards, instead of spending many thousands of points or miles and/or hotel nights to accompany the free night(s) they throw in.

You just can't say those Amex MR points cards are worth 1.7 to 2 cents a point for everyone.

Of course you can. Because they are, when used for travel.

You don't have to KEEP any cards with annual fees, and for the first signup year those cards are all easily profitable well above those fees with their bonuses and various perks and credits

After 1 year, you either ditch it, or you keep it one more (because sometimes you get a retention bonus of points that make that worth doing again).

As long as you keep ANY Amex point earning card- even a free one- you don't lose the points after cancelling the fee cards-- and can still transfer to airlines and such too.

Certainly you can get MORE value flying in nicer seats than coach- but even sticking to coach you can get some pretty decent value that way....

It seems you only fly domestically (since Allegent doesn't fly internationally) but for example you can book domestic short haul on a full service airline for 7500 points pretty regularly (using avios to book american airlines)-- offering you a lot more choice in destinations and days/times too.

For example I recently booked a roundtrip RDU->PIT, which American was getting $344 cash for....for 15,000 avios.

Even better, there's a 40% transfer bonus going on right now (these types of bonuses happen with certain airlines usually 1-2 times a year).

So it only cost me 11,000 amex points to get a $344 main cabin American Airlines coach ticket for this trip.

Which is a value of 3.12 cents a point... even without the transfer bonus it would've been 2.29 cents a point.

AND Amex even has a no-annual-fee card that earns 2x points on every $ spent, so that'll beat a 2%-for-everything solution here too as long as you travel any reasonable amount.

That said- Amex points aren't super useful for hotel value--- you'd wanna head over to the Chase ecosystem there where you can get well north of 2 cents a point for more Hyatt bookings at least.

Citi used to be the arguably the best for hotels.... as they had 1 card that gave you your 4th night on any stay for free, and another that let you get 1.25 cents per point toward any hotel booking-- and you could stack those benefits if you had both cards.

But sadly they've entirely eliminated the 1.25c benefit-- -and the 4th night free card they don't issue anymore (though existing owners got to keep using it so far).

I seldom travel at all, and as I said, even less by plane, but may want an everyday Amex such as this for the every so often deals like you mentioned with Avios. Repped for the leads and advanced strategy.

OMAAT [onemileatatime.com]says these two cards:
Amex EveryDay Card (best personal no annual fee card) 2 MR per $ spent at grocery stores up to $6,000 per yr.

Blue Business Plus Card (best business no annual fee card) 2x MR on the first $50,000 in spend per yr.
I understand I can use my SSN as my TIN to declare as a business so my hunch is this is the card you are referring to.
