Hilo side is a bit cooler (lower 80's), and the beaches are mostly rocky, but they are worth visiting.

Yup, expect to drop $2-3k for the rental car if you stay more than a week.
Typically, in Hawaii, no matter what you rent, they try to upsell you to a more expensive convertible when you get there. I can only imagine how much of an upsell that is now.
