I'm on the big island right now. Kona side is warm (upper 80's most days) and muggy, but there are a lot of great beaches. Sun is intense here as well, definitely need lots of sunscreen.

Hilo side is a bit cooler (lower 80's), and the beaches are mostly rocky, but they are worth visiting.

Rental cars are scarce there right now due to fleet sell offs that happened last year.
Prices can be ludicrous, people were resorting to renting uhauls just to get around.

Book your rental car before pulling the trigger on the flight.

If you're looking for a place to stay on the Big Island, try Hilton's promotions. I'm taking a shot at the Waikoloa Village promo — something like $900 for 5 nights, which includes free car rental, 5k Hilton points, and $200 future Hilton credit. You have to sit through an hour timeshare presentation, but I've done a similar thing before with Hyatt (I think) and it was worth it.

Do you have a link for that? all I can find is 650 for 5 nights, 15k points and no car

No link. I was on the Hilton line for a 25% price match and they asked me if I'd like to stay on the line afterwards for an extra 500 Hilton Honors points to listen to a promo. I'm not quite sure how to replicate it — maybe just call Hilton direct and ask to talk to their promotions department?

Ah I see. I want to take my 5 (soon to be 6) year old to Hawaii in the next year, but summer seems too hot and humid. I've been seeing some SD deals for next year around March/April, which I think is probably a better time frame.

Typically, in Hawaii, no matter what you rent, they try to upsell you to a more expensive convertible when you get there. I can only imagine how much of an upsell that is now.
Are you referring to the local rental car companies there? I've only used Enterprise and National, and that's never happened. I've never been to Hawaii, but I can't imagine that it'd be any different there.

I was reading some comments regarding the rental car shortage and WOW! Residents sure hate tourists even though they rely on tourism dollars. People should just boycott Hawaii and see how long they can survive without tourists. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. Cancun is a much better deal. The people there welcome your business and are super friendly. Treat them with respect and they go above and beyond for you.
I think an American just got shot on the beach from cartels riding on Jet ski shooting someone else in Cancun. YMMV.

Southwest is the same price. 2 checked bags and seating based on check in order 24 hours prior, is a much better deal IMO.

I think Hawaii is one of the only states requiring "vaccine passports" to enter. Just FYI, you might need to make sure you comply with their laws before booking.

Any trouble with picking up your rental car, assuming you have one? I will be there in one week and have two rez one primary and one backup, but still concerned. How was landing and showing the code?
No issues, I also had 2 (one using the Amazon leisure code at Avis, the other through Priceline with Thrifty). No proof asked for, probably helped that there was only 1 person working the desk and there were 8 people in line waiting for their rentals

Waikoloa Village area is fantastic, lots of great beaches. Just a note, if you want to book any tours/excursions, book early (before you get here), that's a mistake I made.

Yup, expect to drop $2-3k for the rental car if you stay more than a week.
I had 2 rentals lined up for my 9 day trip I'm currently on, both under $600 (one for a minivan, other for a full sized car)

Be prepared to spend 130-300$ day from rental companies.

You must be military.. they tend to get 15-30% discounts.

Same here, booked a car 10 months ago and am hoping there are no issues at time of pickup

From my experience... stay around Kona, travel around big island, avoid Hilo. Its almost like the locals all live over in Hilo and they put the tourist area at the exact opposite end of the island to keep you as far away as possible. My experience though was that everyone there was pretty damn nice. I am aware of negative feelings by locals, but didn't experience any while I was there.
