Hey, I'm not justifying the laws, just repeating stuff I've read. There's laws for ownership. There's laws for carry. In general small pocket knives that are obviously pocket knives are fine.

So I bought two knives from Smith & Wesson like a month back, of which I have never owned similar previously, and someone mentioned this. WTH? You can carry around a semi-automatic weapon, but you can't carry around knife. And, no, I wouldn't carry these knives around on my person normally - they are for the random time I need a knife for whatever. So do I have to worry if I have one on my body, outside, I'm going to get arrested or something?

And, more importantly, if they are illegal in my State, why would a company like Smith & Wesson ship to my state?

These knives are not illegal in CA. You're free to carry them however. Many states have laws prohibiting or restricting specific kinds of folding knives called 'switchblades'. These are folding/sliding knives that auto-extend when you press a button using a spring mechanism or gravity assist. The folding knives in this deal (and the Smith & Wesson ones) need to be manually extended using a stud on the blade. They are not considered switchblades.

I'm not in CA (although used to live there). Yeah, I was a teen in the 80's, so I know all about switchblades. I just don't know how the laws have been "adapted" since then to possibly include other knives. I'd feel better if the knives I bought specifically said what laws apply to it in my particular state, if any. I understand, that's probably my responsibility to research, but given what else my state allows, it's kind of crazy to think these knives would be banned, even as concealed.

Retailers are generally pretty good about shipping products only to states where they are legal to possess. Concealed carry, etc. is a more tricky question that needs to be researched. Product companies never voluntarily provide what might be constituted as legal advise. It's too big a liability.

For under @10, toss a few around the house. They are crap knives by high knife standards, but perfect for drawers, glove boxes, and places where you know you will abuse the sh!t out of them. It is good to carry a high quality knife, but just as smart to have another to abuse...
I just bought 6.

Not being snarking, but how exactly do most people carry knives other than concealed? I mean, my two blades are not switchblades, they have the push down hinge release found on most carpet cutters. Of course if I'm carrying them outside my home, it's going in my pocket, not on my forehead.
Most states don't consider a knife as concealed if the pocket clip is visible. As for your previous comment about concealed vs open carry firearms, numerous states now allow you to open carry but you need a license/permit to conceal (except for a couple of states).

Ignorance of your local laws doesn't excuse you from them so just do some quick research on what is and is not allowed where you live.

Dude I'm so sure that it's not concealed when the pocket clip is visible right?

I think in a lot of states it doesn't matter but I'm pretty sure it's like guns right where if you have a holstered weapon that's not concealed and may be legal in some areas (I don't know) where you can't have the weapon concealed without a permit.

Am I wrong I'd like to know...
