A Wizard of Earthsea marks the first of the six now beloved Earthsea titles. Ged was the greatest sorcerer in Earthsea, but in his youth he was the reckless Sparrowhawk. In his hunger for power and knowledge, he tampered with long-held secrets and loosed a terrible shadow upon the world. This is the tumultuous tale of his testing, how he mastered the mighty words of power, tamed an ancient dragon, and crossed death's threshold to restore the balance.

You clearly don't read much of this genre. The author before her passing was only upset JK didn't admit she was inspired by this series. She admits even her ideas aren't original as they all borrow from others such as Tolkien.
I don't mind if they borrow from others ideas so long as they build something different enough for me to enjoy. Reading this book does make you wish she spent a little more time while he was at school, but JKR does a great job of expanding on it. The king killers take is also fun as well. I do wish JKR would pay homage to those authors before her that helped build on this genre. I do know what you mean though.
