"tl;dr - the 980 runs cooler, since it's not got that DRAM cache, and it will write 20GB a whopping .6 seconds slower than the 970 EVO Plus and 1.3 seconds faster than the 970 EVO. 980 is hands-down the SSD to pick. Details to follow if you're interested:

tl;you're STILL going to read? OK, here ya go:

Here's a rundown on how you would perceive the speed difference between the 970 EVO and the 980. At these verified _maximum_ transfer rates - if you are writing a 20 GB file okay? WRITING a 20GB file (assuming the source drive is not a bottleneck, i.e. is equivalent for both), the _theoretical_ elapsed time for the different SSDs is:

The 980 will write that 20GB in ~6.7 seconds (at 3000 MB/s)
The 970 EVO Plus will write that 20GB in ~6.1 seconds (at 3300 MB/s)
The 970 EVO will write that 20GB in ~8 seconds (at 2500 MB/s)

Which is to say that the differences would normally not be perceived. When considering that the 980, without the DRAM, is generating less heat - which matters - I would definitely go with the 980 for better heat management and a $20 savings over the 970 EVO Plus (2021-05-16 prices). You're only losing .6 seconds for those frequent huge file writes, heh.

20 GB is easily 3 to 5 full-length videos, in HD, or more - in under 7 seconds! Crazy.

Yep, go with the 980 with lower heat and wave goodbye to the .6 seconds... Ehh, probably not enough time to wave - wink goodbye. ;-)

As far as downloads - I cannot conceive of a situation where these SSDs will have ANY effect upon the speed. Period. Even on a super-fast broadband connection, the network is going to be the bottleneck. We are not quite getting multiple GB/s on typical broadband service. Typically, even a SATA drive at 550 MB/s will surpass most broadband download speeds, substantially even - most of the time."

dramless, expect entry level performance.
The random r/w seems to be better than the 970 Pro, but everything else seems to be worse

In benchmarks, absolutely. In real life...nope. they are paired with a 11600k/Asus Tuf z590/16x2GB setup I use exclusively for my Arcade cabinet. If you are into heavy video editing and other "job" related apps maybe...it all really bolis down to with what you intend to use your build for. That has always been the main question behind a PC build. "What do you plan on using it for"?
Thanks, just regular stuff.

I rather see some deal in something like 256gb for $19.99. Call me crazy but all I need is a faster drive to install the OS and all the data goes into external drives. Not a gamer here, so. Just saying.
This! I just need 120 for my OS and 4TB for storage.

hi, can this be added on top of the current 256 SSD in the Dell G5 system that is currently selling for $580? Will it be a smooth recognition of this added SSD? Any help will be appreciated.

FYI, Here is a good kit for M.2 mounting screws as it doesn't come with one. Pretty good size variety for only 5 bucks!

It's only needed if you lost the screw(s) that come with the MoBo.

Yup, or if you bought a prebuilt / secondhand / used / etc... that didn't come with one in it.
Screws also might be needed if you bought a Dell laptop.

I bought a Dell G5 15 SE 5505 (Slickdeal) last year, intending to use the empty M.2 slot. I later bought a Samsung 970 EVO SDD (Slickdeal) to install. I wasn't happy to find the laptop doesn't come with a necessary "SSD Bracket" and screws. I tried buying the bracket starting in December. First they sent the wrong part, even though I'd been very explicit and even pointed out the page of the service manual the mentions the bracket. Then the correct bracket wasn't in stock the next many times I asked. Finally they said it was in stock and I ordered it May 8, estimated delivery date May 13. It was delayed and delivered June 1, about six months after I started trying to get it. When I ordered the bracket I asked about ordering screws and I was assured (via chat) that the bracket would come with the screws. It didn't. I asked if they'd send me the screws they told me I'd paid for. Days after nagging for a reply they said no.

I finally installed it today, stealing screws from an old dead Dell laptop I have laying around.

It's really frustrating that Dell advertises a laptop with an empty M.2 slot, but they ship the laptop without the necessary bracket, and it can take months to get the bracket.

Spend the extra $ and get the PCIe 4.0 x4 if you got the mobo to support it. Otherwise this is a good deal on a great drive.

nope.

I can barely tell the difference between the HP 920 and 970 Evo. there is a diminishing of return after you hit certain speed. also, games (at least ones that i played) aren't bottle neck by loading speed. you may not able to tell any difference between SATA SSD and NVME unless you do a lot of video editing, database or running a lot VM .
I'm right there with you. Outside of a quicker boot up I never noticed much of a difference between my old sata SSD drives and nvme during normal use. I definitely didn't notice a difference between the HP 920ex and the WD Black 750. Oddly I did notice a difference between those two and a 970 Evo plus. That Evo plus did not like writing large amounts at once. Compared to the others it used to slow way down to the point it was slower than old platter drives during parts of the write. Even though the WD Black 750 can be found really cheap at times and is quicker I still prefer that HP 920 over the 750. The 750 really benefits from a heatsink while the 920 always remained much cooler even without a heatsink. The WD is just a secondary drive mostly unused yet with a heatsink sits around 42c while the HP that is my C drive sits at 33c. I have had the 920 since 2018 and it is still sitting at 100% health. I know that means nothing in reality but it's a great cheap option.

I don't think I've ever seen this Samsung SSD competitively priced as low as it's being advertised for now. Sucks b/c had they priced it that low last year, I would've got it instead of the SN_750.

Going to give it a try to replace a hybrid drive that's been giving me problems in my Dell XPS. Luckily it also has an m.2 nvme slot.

980 is not to be confused with 980 PRO. This is a budget drive. SD 750 is a higher-end drive even if its older.

Oh ok, thanks for the clarification and confirming that I did indeed made the right decision by going w/ the SN_750 😄😁

Keep in mind people; these SSDs are at the end of their lives, because Chia (XCH) farmers have used them up, and returned them before the end of their return/refund window. So they will only have a few thousand more Terabyte Writes left on them. Which could only be a few months of normal use. This is why they are being sold for so cheap. I recommend that you all buy them in a NEW condition.
